Awo, Now, Nu is een baanbrekende documentaireserie die de complexe thema’s van identiteit, sociale ongelijkheid en activisme binnen het Nederlands-Caribisch gebied verkent. Door middel van meeslepende verhalen en levendige storytelling werpt de serie licht op de strijd en de veerkracht van gemeenschappen die streven naar gelijkheid en erkenning. Door te focussen op persoonlijke verhalen nodigt Awo, Now, Nu kijkers uit om stil te staan bij het verleden en een toekomst van veerkracht en hoop voor zich te zien.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 | 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮
Roland Colastica is een Curaçaose toneelacteur, regisseur, dichter en schrijver die een blijvende stempel heeft gedrukt op het Caribische theater en de literatuur. Met een carrière die meerdere decennia beslaat, staat hij bekend om zijn krachtige podiumprésence en zijn toewijding aan verhalen die diep geworteld zijn in de cultuur, taal en geleefde realiteit van Curaçao. Als schrijver heeft Colastica een veelzijdig en rijk oeuvre opgebouwd voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen, waarin verbeeldingskracht hand in hand gaat met scherpe maatschappelijke reflectie. In zijn poëzie en verhalen verkent hij thema’s als identiteit, erfgoed en veerkracht. Daarnaast is hij de maker van de documentaireserie Awo, Now, Nu, waarin hij zich richt op het vastleggen van hedendaagse Caribische stemmen en perspectieven.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗮𝘆𝗮 𝘁𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮 | 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮 | 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗼  | 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 | 𝟮𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗻
Tijdens de zomervakantie, terwijl het WK voetbal de straten vult met opwinding, brengt de tienjarige Chikí, wiens naam ‘klein’ betekent, zijn dagen door met voetballen in een levendige maar meedogenloze wijk op Curaçao. Begaafd voor zijn leeftijd droomt hij ervan profvoetballer te worden, met visioenen van internationale stadions en financiële vrijheid. Trots en fel onafhankelijk verbergt hij de armoede van zijn familie achter talent en bravoure. Wanneer Chikí hoort hoe hun huisbaas dreigt met uitzetting als de huur niet voor zaterdag wordt betaald, besluit hij in het geheim zijn overwerkte moeder te helpen. Samen met zijn beste vriend Buchi neemt hij deel aan illegale straatvoetbalwedstrijden: snelle, kooi-achtige wedstrijden georganiseerd door twee gewapende tienergangsters, Brutu en de onvoorspelbare Malbat. De risico’s zijn groot, maar Chikí’s talent maakt hem al snel tot een lokale sensatie en het prijzengeld begint te groeien. Onder begeleiding van zijn toegewijde grootmoeder en Prèkè, een rebelse jonge coach die hem leert dat hart net zo belangrijk is als ambitie, raakt Chikí verstrikt wanneer geruchten over geweld toenemen en hij onder druk wordt gezet om opzettelijk een wedstrijd te verliezen. Hij moet kiezen tussen angst, integriteit en overleving. Op de zaterdag van de finale, door de buurt bestempeld als het ‘echte WK’, staan de spanningen op scherp. Wanneer Malbat een pistool trekt, verandert een onverwachte daad van opoffering alles en wordt Chikí gedwongen na te denken over wat heldendom werkelijk betekent, zowel op als buiten het veld.

Ramses Petronia is een Curaçaose filmmaker en visueel verteller wiens werk zich richt op identiteit, cultuur en de sociale realiteit van het Caribisch gebied. Met een scherp gevoel voor sfeer en narratieve gelaagdheid maakt hij films die zowel intiem als reflectief zijn, vaak geworteld in de geleefde ervaringen van zijn gemeenschap. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een bedachtzame, observerende benadering, waarbij hij stemmen en perspectieven naar voren brengt die vaak onderbelicht blijven. In zijn films onderzoekt Petronia thema’s als verbondenheid, herinnering en de complexiteit van het hedendaagse Caribische leven. Met een sterke toewijding aan het ontwikkelen en delen van Caribische verhalen, zowel lokaal als internationaal, behoort Ramses Petronia tot een nieuwe generatie filmmakers die het filmische landschap van de regio vormgeeft.

Tijdens de geschiedenisles raken Rinio, Marvin en Dogla gefascineerd door het verhaal van het mysterieuze Fort Buku, ooit een schuilplaats van de Boni-vrijheidsstrijders. Deze strijders waren voorheen tot slaaf gemaakte mensen die in opstand kwamen tegen koloniale onderdrukking. Wanneer de drie vrienden horen dat de verdwijning van het fort nooit is opgehelderd, trekken ze de Surinaamse jungle in om het te vinden. Wat begint als een spannend avontuur, verandert al snel in een magische reis die hen verbindt met hun roots.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 | 𝗟𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼
Loëlle Monsanto is een filmmaker uit Suriname, gevestigd in Nederland. In haar werk komen jeugdhorror, magisch realisme en cultureel gewortelde verhalen regelmatig terug. Ze maakte haar debuut met Sranan Folktales, een korte horror webserie die zij tussen 2016 en 2019 in Suriname volledig zelfstandig produceerde. Voor deze reeks schreef ze de scenario’s en regisseerde zij de afleveringen. In 2019 verhuisde Loëlle naar Nederland om verder te studeren aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Voor haar afstuderen in 2023 maakte zij als schrijver en regisseur de korte jeugdhorrorfilm Asema, de zesde aflevering van Sranan Folktales. De film won de Wildcard van het Nederlands Filmfonds, waarmee een nieuwe jeugdfilm kon worden ontwikkeld. Met deze steun maakte zij Fort Buku, een film die zij schreef, coproduceerde en regisseerde. Fort Buku ging op 28 september 2025 in première op het Nederlands Film Festival.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
Caribbean Creativity is een in Amsterdam gevestigde non-profitorganisatie die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Caribische en Caribisch-georiënteerde cinema in Nederland en daarbuiten. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 300 vertoningen georganiseerd in Nederlandse bioscopen en op filmfestivals, waaronder tal van premières. In 2020 lanceerde de organisatie YardVibes, een streamingplatform met werk van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers. Roland Colastica is a Curaçaoan stage actor, director, poet, and writer whose work has made a lasting impact on Caribbean theatre and literature. With a career spanning decades, he is known for his powerful presence on stage and his commitment to storytelling rooted in the culture, language, and lived experiences of Curaçao. As a writer, Colastica has created a rich body of work for both children and adults, blending imagination with social reflection. His poetry and stories explore themes of identity, heritage, and resilience. He is also the creator of the documentary series Awo, Now, Nu, which reflects his ongoing dedication to capturing contemporary Caribbean voices and perspectives.

During the summer school break, as the Football World Cup fills the streets with excitement, 10-year-old Chikí, whose name means ‘small’, spends his days playing football in a vibrant but unforgiving neighborhood in Curaçao. Gifted beyond his years, he dreams of becoming a professional player, imagining international stadiums and financial freedom. Proud and fiercely independent, he hides his family’s poverty behind talent and bravado. When Chikí overhears their landlord threatening eviction unless the rent is paid by Saturday, he secretly decides to help his overworked mother. Together with his best friend Buchi, he enters illegal street football matches: fast, cage-style games run by two armed teenage gangsters, Brutu and the volatile Malbat. The risks are high, but Chikí’s skill quickly makes him a local sensation, and the prize money starts to grow. Guided by his devoted grandmother and Prèkè, a rebellious young coach who teaches that heart matters as much as ambition, Chikí struggles as rumors of violence spread and he is pressured to deliberately lose a match. He must choose between fear, integrity, and survival. On the Saturday of the final game, dubbed the neighborhood’s “real World Cup”, the stakes are high. When Malbat pulls a gun, an unexpected act of sacrifice changes everything, forcing Chikí to confront what heroism truly means, both on and off the field.

Ramses Petronia is a Curaçaoan filmmaker and visual storyteller whose work explores identity, culture, and the social realities of the Caribbean. With a strong eye for atmosphere and narrative depth, he creates films that are both intimate and reflective, often grounded in the lived experiences of his community. His work is characterized by a thoughtful, observational approach, bringing forward voices and perspectives that are often underrepresented. Through his filmmaking, Petronia engages with themes of belonging, memory, and the complexities of contemporary Caribbean life. Committed to developing and sharing Caribbean stories on both a local and international level, Ramses Petronia is part of a new generation of filmmakers shaping the region’s cinematic landscape.

During history class, Rinio, Marvin, and Dogla become captivated by the story of the mysterious Fort Buku, once the refuge of the Boni freedom fighters. These warriors were formerly enslaved people who fought back against colonial oppression. When the three friends learn about the fort’s unresolved disappearance, they head into the Surinamese jungle to find it. What starts as an exciting adventure soon turns into a magical journey that connects them to their roots.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 | 𝗟𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼
Loëlle Monsanto is a filmmaker from Suriname, based in the Netherlands. Her work often features youth horror, magical realism, and culturally rooted stories. She made her debut with Sranan Folktales, a short horror web series that she produced independently in Suriname between 2016 and 2019, together with a group of self-taught young creatives. For this series, she wrote the scripts and directed all episodes. In 2019, Loelle moved to the Netherlands to pursue further studies at the University of the Arts Utrecht. For her graduation in 2023, she wrote and directed the short youth horror film Asema, the sixth episode of Sranan Folktales. The fi lm won the Wildcard from the Netherlands Film Fund, which enabled the development of a new youth film. With this support, she made Fort Buku, a film she wrote, co-produced, and directed. Fort Buku premiered on 28 September 2025 at the Netherlands Film Festival.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that is, since 2008, committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 300 screenings in Dutch cinemas and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. YardVibes currently offers over 100 titles, including feature films, web series, documentaries, and short films, with new content added monthly.
