What defines contemporary Caribbean architecture? We have asked ourselves this question many times while designing new projects on the Dutch Caribbean islands. After 25 years of work in the Caribbean we wanted to document our work and visualize the search for an answer to this question. Everyone knows what you mean when you talk about Caribbean music. Styles such as reggae, calypso, soca, salsa, zouk and merengue are known worldwide. This music emerged from a mix of African, European and other influences, characteristic of Caribbean culture. But architecture in the Caribbean is often reduced to the traditional styles. Curacaoโs colorful facades, Bonaireโs historic slave houses, and Sabaโs gingerbread trims. While beautiful, these images only scratch the surface of the islandsโ architectural diversity and innovation. Especially when it comes to contemporary architecture, there has been very little documentedโuntil nowโฆ So, what does contemporary Caribbean architecture actually look like? And what influence do climate, migration, and heritage, for example, have on it? For us, like the local music and language, architecture is a mix of influences. Our documentary Kombinรก โ which literally is translated as โmixedโ โ tells the story of how our contemporary projects reflect the local culture.

Lyongo Juliana is a Curaรงaoan-Dutch architect whose work bridges the Netherlands and the Caribbean. Born in Utrecht and raised in Curaรงao, he studied architecture at Pennsylvania State University before completing his education in Architecture and Urbanism at Eindhoven University of Technology. Over the past 25 years, Juliana has designed numerous projects in the Caribbean and the Netherlands, combining sensitivity to local culture and climate with a strong commitment to the social role of architecture. As founder of lyongo architecture, with offices in Amsterdam and Willemstad, Juliana advocates for more diverse and inclusive approaches to architecture and urban development. In 2020, he served as Architect in Residence at the Amsterdam Architecture Centre (Arcam), where he researched diversity and inclusivity in the built environment, and subsequently continued this work as a fellow in Pakhuis de Zwijgerโs Designing Cities for All programme. His architectural projects include the Curaรงao Medical Center and various residential, educational and urban developments across the Caribbean and the Netherlands.

Forsa Ansestral follows one week in the lives of tambรบ artists and elders from Curaรงao, Aruba, Bonaire, and the Dutch Caribbean diaspora as they come together for performances, workshops, gatherings, and conversations. Through these intimate encounters, the documentary explores tambรบ, an Afro-Caribbean musical and cultural tradition rooted in resistance, spirituality, and community, as a living archive of ancestral knowledge. Moving between generations and across borders, the film examines how heritage is embodied, transmitted, and continually reshaped. Conversations about gender, spirituality, modernization, and tradition reveal both tensions and connections within the community, while rhythm, movement, storytelling, and performance become vehicles for collective memory and healing. Forsa Ansestral ultimately asks what it means to inherit a cultural tradition, what responsibilities come with carrying it forward, and who gets to define its essence and shape its future.

Gyoni Jamanika is a Curaรงaoan cultural researcher and heritage practitioner whose work engages with Caribbean history, cultural memory, identity, and the transmission of knowledge across generations. Jamanika has been involved in research on Caribbean genealogy and historical archives and has contributed to initiatives concerned with making Caribbean histories and cultural heritage more accessible. Jamanika is connected to SendeBibu, a community-led collective dedicated to preserving, sharing, and activating the cultural heritage of Curaรงao and the wider Dutch Caribbean. Through dialogue, workshops, performances, and intergenerational encounters, the collective creates spaces in which heritage is not simply documented but experienced and carried forward. Its work places particular emphasis on decolonization, community service, and connecting generations. One of SendeBibuโs recent projects is Forsa Ansestral, developed around tambรบ in collaboration with Museo di Tambรบ Shon Cola.

Wat kenmerkt hedendaagse Caribische architectuur? Die vraag hebben we onszelf vaak gesteld bij het ontwerpen van nieuwe projecten op de Nederlands-Caribische eilanden. Na 25 jaar werken in het Caribisch gebied wilden we ons werk documenteren en onze zoektocht naar een antwoord op deze vraag in beeld brengen. Iedereen weet wat er bedoeld wordt als we het over Caribische muziek hebben. Stijlen als reggae, calypso, soca, salsa, zouk en merengue zijn wereldwijd bekend. Deze muziek is ontstaan uit een mix van Afrikaanse, Europese en andere invloeden, kenmerkend voor de Caribische cultuur. Maar architectuur in het Caribisch gebied wordt vaak gereduceerd tot traditionele stijlen: de kleurrijke gevels van Curaรงao, de historische slavenhuisjes van Bonaire en het karakteristieke sierwerk van Saba. Hoe mooi deze beelden ook zijn, ze laten slechts een klein deel zien van de architectonische diversiteit en vernieuwing op de eilanden. Vooral over hedendaagse architectuur is tot nu toe maar weinig gedocumenteerd. Hoe ziet hedendaagse Caribische architectuur er dan eigenlijk uit? En welke invloed hebben bijvoorbeeld klimaat, migratie en erfgoed daarop? Voor ons is architectuur, net als de lokale muziek en taal, een mix van invloeden. Onze documentaire Kombinรก โ wat letterlijk โgemengdโ betekent โ vertelt het verhaal van hoe onze hedendaagse projecten de lokale cultuur weerspiegelen.

Lyongo Juliana is een Curaรงaos-Nederlandse architect wiens werk Nederland en het Caribisch gebied met elkaar verbindt. Hij werd geboren in Utrecht en groeide op op Curaรงao. Hij studeerde architectuur aan Pennsylvania State University en voltooide vervolgens zijn opleiding in Architecture and Urbanism aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. In de afgelopen 25 jaar heeft Juliana talrijke projecten ontworpen in het Caribisch gebied en Nederland, waarbij hij aandacht voor de lokale cultuur en het klimaat combineert met een sterke betrokkenheid bij de maatschappelijke rol van architectuur. Als oprichter van lyongo architecture, met kantoren in Amsterdam en Willemstad, pleit Juliana voor meer diverse en inclusieve benaderingen van architectuur en stedelijke ontwikkeling. In 2020 was hij Architect in Residence bij het Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam (Arcam), waar hij onderzoek deed naar diversiteit en inclusiviteit in de gebouwde omgeving. Vervolgens zette hij dit werk voort als fellow binnen het programma Designing Cities for All van Pakhuis de Zwijger. Forsa Ansestral volgt een week uit het leven van tambรบ-artiesten en ouderen uit Curaรงao, Aruba, Bonaire en de Nederlands-Caribische diaspora, die samenkomen voor optredens, workshops, bijeenkomsten en gesprekken. Aan de hand van deze intieme ontmoetingen verkent de documentaire tambรบ, een Afro-Caribische muzikale en culturele traditie die geworteld is in verzet, spiritualiteit en gemeenschap, als een levend archief van voorouderlijke kennis. De film beweegt tussen generaties en over grenzen heen en onderzoekt hoe erfgoed wordt belichaamd, doorgegeven en voortdurend opnieuw vormgegeven. Gesprekken over gender, spiritualiteit, modernisering en traditie leggen zowel spanningen als verbindingen binnen de gemeenschap bloot, terwijl ritme, beweging, verhalen en performances fungeren als dragers van collectief geheugen en heling. Uiteindelijk stelt Forsa Ansestral de vraag wat het betekent om een culturele traditie te erven, welke verantwoordelijkheid gepaard gaat met het doorgeven ervan, en wie de essentie ervan mag bepalen en de toekomst ervan mag vormgeven.

Gyoni Jamanika is een Curaรงaose cultuuronderzoeker en erfgoedprofessional die zich in zijn werk bezighoudt met Caribische geschiedenis, cultureel geheugen, identiteit en de overdracht van kennis tussen generaties. Jamanika is betrokken geweest bij onderzoek naar Caribische genealogie en historische archieven en heeft bijgedragen aan initiatieven die erop gericht zijn de Caribische geschiedenis en het culturele erfgoed toegankelijker te maken. Jamanika is verbonden aan SendeBibu, een door de gemeenschap gedragen collectief dat zich inzet voor het behouden, delen en activeren van het culturele erfgoed van Curaรงao en het bredere Nederlands-Caribische gebied. Door middel van dialoog, workshops, performances en intergenerationele ontmoetingen creรซert het collectief ruimtes waarin erfgoed niet alleen wordt gedocumenteerd, maar ook wordt beleefd en doorgegeven. Daarbij ligt bijzondere nadruk op dekolonisatie, gemeenschapswerk en het verbinden van generaties. Een van de recente projecten van SendeBibu is Forsa Ansestral, een project rond tambรบ dat in samenwerking met Museo di Tambรบ Shon Cola is ontwikkeld.

Caribbean Creativity is een in Kingston en Amsterdam gevestigde non-profitorganisatie die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Caribische cinema. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 350 vertoningen georganiseerd, waaronder tal van premiรจres. In 2020 lanceerde ze YardVibes, een streamingplatform met werk van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers. Africadelic is een organisatie en platform dat zich inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Afrikaanse en Afrikaanse-diasporische culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme in Nederland. Het jaarlijkse Africadelic Festival is een ode aan het Afrikaanse continent en zijn wereldwijde diaspora, en biedt een podium voor de culturele rijkdom en diepe invloed die Afrodescendants wereldwijd hebben op cultuur en samenleving. Dit jaar organiseerde Africadelic de 11e editie van het Africadelic Festival van 20-27 mei 2026, met opnieuw een week vol concerten, films en gesprekken. Ventilator Cinema is een onafhankelijke, non-profit bioscoop en culturele ruimte in OT301 aan de Overtoom in Amsterdam. De bioscoop wordt gerund door Amsterdam Alternative en is gevestigd in het voormalige gebouw van de Nederlandse Filmacademie. Ventilator vertoont onafhankelijke en alternatieve films, documentaires en experimentele cinema, aangevuld met discussies, workshops, performances en andere culturele evenementen.
