Van Bahia tot Brooklyn: Caribische Verhalen

Cinema Hoogt in Bieb Neude, in collaboration with 𝗥𝗲/𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 and 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, presents a special preview of the new television series 𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗹𝘆𝗻: 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻 (2023). This 7-part VPRO series will soon be on television (NPO2), and this evening we will screen the episode about Curaçao. With an introduction by Curaçaoan author 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗻, who recently published her first Dutch novel Faya Lobi (2022), and 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝘆𝗻𝗰𝗵 (born in Suriname and raised on Curaçao), a lecturer-researcher focused on and committed to healing from the colonial past at the Athena Institute (Free University Amsterdam). In addition, as supporting film the short dance video 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 by Kim Darbouze and Ashley Themba will be screened.

Nowhere have so many peoples and cultures from all over the world been violently brought together as in the Caribbean. Slavery and colonialism have turned the society there into a multicolored melting pot. In the series From Bahia to Brooklyn: Caribbean stories, journalist Nina Jurna investigates how history affects the present in seven countries and how this leads to a new Caribbean culture.

On her journey, Nina Jurna successively visits Brazil, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Curaçao, the Dominican Republic (and the border with Haiti) and Jamaica, before ending up in the rich Caribbean culture in the United States. Along the way, Jurna experiences the journey across the Caribbean more and more as an investigation into her own roots.

𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮
Nina Jurna (1969) is a Dutch correspondent in Latin America for NRC and NOS, among others. She has been living in Brazil since 2011 and was previously stationed in Suriname, where she lived and worked for over ten years. Jurna recently made the podcast Latin Impact for VPRO Free Sounds in which she searches for the most penetrating songs from South America. Jurna was also a guest in Zomergasten in 2019.

𝗥𝗲/𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲
The NWA-funded research project Re/Presenting Europe investigates representations of black and other non-white people in sports, hip-hop and education in the Netherlands to see how social boundaries, tensions and fears can be removed. The idea that many ‘Others’ have contributed to the culture and history of the Netherlands and Europe is then integrated into practice, from education to art. Together with many societal partners, this project creates more complex, nuanced and diverse knowledges of Dutch and European identities with the aim of promoting the connectedness, resilience and future of a ‘super diverse’ Netherlands and Europe.

The television series can be seen from June 9 on NPO2 and NPO Start. 𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗶𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗹𝘆𝗻: 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻 is directed by Martijn Blekendaal and produced by Memphis Features in co-production with VPRO.

Met een inleiding door de Curaçaose schrijver 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗝𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘂𝗻, die onlangs haar eerste Nederlandstalige roman Faya Lobi (2022) heeft gepubliceerd, en 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝘆𝗻𝗰𝗵 (geboren in Suriname en opgegroeid op Curaçao), docent-onderzoeker op het gebied van het helen van het koloniale verleden aan het Athena Instituut (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). Nergens zijn zoveel volken en culturen van over de hele wereld gewelddadig samengebracht als in het Caribisch gebied. Slavernij en kolonialisme hebben hier een veelkleurige smeltkroes van de samenleving gemaakt. In de serie Van Bahia tot Brooklyn: Caribische verhalen onderzoekt journalist Nina Jurna in zeven landen hoe de geschiedenis doorwerkt in het heden en hoe dit leidt tot een nieuwe Caribische cultuur.

Op haar reis bezoekt Nina Jurna achtereenvolgens Brazilië, Suriname, Trinidad Tobago, Curaçao, de Dominicaanse Republiek (en de grens met Haïti) en Jamaica, om uiteindelijk in de rijke Caribische cultuur in de Verenigde Staten te eindigen. Gaandeweg het maken van de serie ervaart Jurna de reis dwars door de Cariben meer en meer als een onderzoek naar haar eigen roots.

𝗡𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗝𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗮
Nina Jurna (1969) is Nederlands correspondent in Latijns-Amerika voor onder meer NRC en NOS. Ze woont sinds 2011 in Brazilië en was eerder gestationeerd in Suriname, waar ze ruim tien jaar woonde en werkte. Onlangs maakte Jurna de podcast Latin Impact voor VPRO Vrije Geluiden waarin ze op zoek gaat naar de meest indringende songs van Zuid-Amerika. Ook was Jurna in 2019 te gast in Zomergasten.

𝗥𝗲/𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲
Het NWA-gesubsidieerde onderzoeksproject Re/Presenting Europe analyseert representaties van zwarte en andere niet-witte mensen in sport, hiphop en onderwijs in Nederland om te kijken hoe sociale grenzen, spanningen en angsten kunnen worden weggenomen. Het idee dat vele ‘Anderen’ hebben bijgedragen aan de cultuur en geschiedenis van Nederland en Europa wordt vervolgens geïntegreerd in de praktijk, van onderwijs tot kunst. Samen met vele maatschappelijke partners creëert dit project meer complexe, genuanceerde en diverse kennis van Nederlandse en Europese identiteiten met als doel de verbondenheid, veerkracht en toekomst van een ‘superdivers’ Nederland en Europa te bevorderden.
