Reggae Boyz (2018, ’72) is een documentaire over de bewogen kwalificatiereeks van het Jamaicaanse mannenvoetbalelftal – de ‘Reggae Boyz’ – voor de WK 2014 in Brazilië (waar Nederland onverwachts derde werd). Als kwalificatie in het water lijkt te vallen, besluit de nieuwe bondscoach, de kleurrijke Duitser Winnie Schäfer, samen te gaan werken met enkele reggaeartiesten (Bunny Wailer en The No-Maddz) en een Rastafari fabrieksarbeider/amateurvoetballer om het land zowel binnen als buiten het veld te verenigen. Na festivalselecties in Polen, Duitsland, Italië, Amerika en Trinidad & Tobago, is deze hilarische sport- en muziekdocu nu voor het eerst te zien in Amsterdam!
Surf Girls Jamaica (2019, ’16) is een korte film over Imani Wilmot, een inspirerende Jamaicaanse surfster die haar sport gebruikt als een middel om het vaak harde leven van vrouwen in Kingston en omstreken te veranderen.

Synopsis Reggae Boyz
Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world. But on November 16, 1997, when Jamaica’s national soccer team – a.k.a. the ‘Reggae Boyz’ – qualified for the 1998 World Cup, not a single bullet was fired in the country. As the Reggae Boyz embark on their 2014 World Cup campaign, an amateur player named ‘Tuffy’ Anderson dreams of playing on the national team. Tuffy works in a steel factory by day and plays in the local amateur league by night, refusing to give up his dream of one day playing on the national team.
On the soccer field Jamaica’s big dream comes crashing to a halt. After a devastating losing streak, the coaching staff resigns. To revitalize the mission, Jamaica hires the colorful Winfried Schäfer, a journeyman coach who is known in his native Germany as Winnie Wahnsinn (Wacky Winnie). Seeking knowledge about the local culture and sensing how much music and soccer are intertwined in Jamaica, Winnie meets the local newcomer band No-Maddz and visits Bunny Wailer – the lone survivor of Bob Marley and the Wailers. Bunny introduces him to the ‘benefits of herb’ and suggests “putting Tuffy on the team will change your fortunes.”
Winnie puts Tuffy on the team who promptly rewards him by scoring a last-minute goal that keeps the campaign alive a little longer. While Jamaica’s World Cup dreams don’t come true in the end, Tuffy’s goal and his courage to keep a dream alive, against all odds, inspires Jamaicans of all stripes and sets the national team on a path to success. Will the Reggae Boyz reach their first-ever Gold Cup Final?
Synopsis Surf Girls Jamaica
Surf Girls Jamaica is a short documentary by Lucy Jane and Joya Berrow that focuses on Imani Wilmot, an inspirational Jamaican surfer who uses the sport as a means of transforming the tough lives of the women around her, in Kingston and surrounding areas.
Imani has harnessed the power of surfing to empower these women through training camps at Bull Bay, which bring women together to learn the mindful art of riding waves. This develops self-motivation, entrepreneurial spirit, respect for the environment and a sense of community. Globally, Imani has taken it as her personal responsibility to empower women of color to have access to surfing and see a place for themselves within the global surf industry.
This powerful short film highlights the importance of Imani’s work and follows the stories of several of the women who have improved their situations since finding surfing, as well as showcasing Jamaica’s first all-female surf contest.
