Designed for filmmakers, students, activists, community organizers, and anyone interested in the ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜†๐˜๐—ฒ๐—น๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ, the workshop will explore how documentary film can be used as a ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜ƒ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜†, ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป, ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—ด๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—บ๐—ผ๐—ฏ๐—ถ๐—น๐—ถ๐˜‡๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป. Drawing on nearly four decades of experience in film and media production, Figueroa will discuss the creative and practical processes involved in developing documentaries that challenge dominant narratives, amplify marginalized voices, and inspire action.

Participants will gain insight into topics such as identifying social and environmental issues, researching and shaping documentary stories, ethical filmmaking practices, working with communities, and using film as part of broader activist campaigns. The session will also include screenings and discussion of selected clips from several of Figueroaโ€™s environmental documentaries, including her award-winning film ๐—๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ and her newly completed documentary ๐—•๐—ฒ๐˜†๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐—•๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, which chronicles the ๐—ฆ๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—–๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐˜ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐— ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜ and is also featured in this yearโ€™s festival programme.

Esther Figueroa is the founder of Vagabond Media and has worked across virtually every aspect of film and television production for almost 40 years. She describes her mission as giving voice to people and perspectives often excluded from mainstream media, while challenging the dominant values, information, and worldviews promoted by commercial media. Caribbean Creativity is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that is, since 2008, committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 300 screenings in Dutch cinemas and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. YardVibes currently offers over 100 titles, including feature films, web series, documentaries, and short films, with new content added monthly.
