Kanaval: A People’s History of Haiti in Six Chapters

On 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟮𝟬 at 𝟭𝟵:𝟬𝟬 𝗵𝗿𝘀, 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 and 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 present the 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 of 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗹: 𝗔 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮! In this documentary, Haitian history is presented through an explosion of colour, dance and music, as the country prepares for its legendary carnival. The screening is hosted in celebration and commemoration of the 𝟮𝟮𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 and will include a 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 on Haiti’s past, present and future with director 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗵 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻, historian 𝗞𝗲𝘀𝗲𝘄𝗮 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻, artist 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗲𝘀 and advocate 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Kanaval is a visually arresting award-winning documentary that is set in the present but tells the rich story of Haiti’s past, as we follow a number of carnival performers in the lead up to and during the annual Jacmel Mardi Gras. These performers relate their own personal histories as well as the stories of their carnival characters, representing moments and people from the distant and not so distant Haitian past. Interwoven with the interviews, testimonies and observational footage, is archive material drawn from a wide variety of sources to enhance our understanding of Haitian history and culture from the time of the indigenous Taino through to the present day.

On January 1, 1804, Haiti became a free republic after a revolution that began in 1791, declaring independence for all people from colonial rule and enslavement.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮, 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 is a film theatre in Amsterdam specifically dedicated to screening music films. 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 is an Amsterdam-based platform and festival promoting African and African diasporic cultural creativity, diversity and activism in the Netherlands. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond.

Kanaval is een awardwinnende documentaire die zich in het heden afspeelt, maar het rijke verhaal van het verleden van Haïti vertelt. We volgen een aantal carnavalsartiesten in de aanloop naar en tijdens het jaarlijkse Jacmel Mardi Gras. Deze artiesten vertellen hun eigen persoonlijke geschiedenis en de verhalen van hun carnavalskarakters, die momenten en mensen uit het verre en minder verre Haïtiaanse verleden vertegenwoordigen. Verweven met de interviews, getuigenissen en observatiebeelden, bevat de film archiefmateriaal afkomstig uit een grote verscheidenheid aan bronnen om ons begrip van de Haïtiaanse geschiedenis en cultuur vanaf de tijd van de inheemse Taino tot nu te vergroten.
