AfroJam: Bad Like Brooklyn Dancehall

On 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝟭𝟲, at 𝟮𝟭.𝟭𝟱 𝗵𝗿𝘀, 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸, 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, and 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 present another special screening of 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗹𝘆𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹 (2023) in 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 as part of 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗝𝗮𝗺! Executive produced by 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗴𝗴𝘆, this documentary explores the dancehall music scene that reverberated across Brooklyn in the 1980s and 1990s and its ever-present influence on a younger generation. After the 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 and 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 at the 𝗔𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 and 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗦𝗼𝗶𝗹 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗙𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 respectively, we now host another 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 of this great dancehall film! The event will be introduced by Angel Misier aka 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗿.

In addition, we will be screening 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝘀𝘁 (2023, 12′), a new dancehall film by eye juice that illuminates the spiritual embodiment of street dancers and performers in Jamaica, as a supporting film! The film shows that, through a unifying experience, dancehall emerges as a tool to articulate the ineffable, a lifeline that invigorates garrison communities across the island. And on top of that, we will be showing the new Paramount biopic 𝗕𝗼𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘆: 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲 at 19.00 hrs. So get ready for this unique double or even tripple bill!

Nicknamed the 15th Parish of Jamaica, New York became home to an influential movement that saw dancehall rise alongside hip-hop and eventually spread across the country. Executive produced by Shaggy, this documentary brings in heavy hitters like Sean Paul, Ding Dong, and many more, including Shaggy himself, to tell the story. With never-before-seen archival footage that bridges the journey from Kingston to Brooklyn, this film will delight not just dancehall fans but believers of the power of music to bring people together.
