𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗻
Fanon (2024) is a compelling biographical drama directed by Jean-Claude Barny, a French director of Guadeloupean and Trinidadian origin, that focuses on Fanon’s tenure at the Blida psychiatric hospital in Algeria during the 1950s. In 1953, the Martiniquan psychiatrist became the head of the hospital’s psychiatry department, where he treated both French soldiers and Algerian victims of torture and introduced innovative, patient-centered methods of psychiatric care. His progressive approach faced resistance from colleagues and the institution’s director. As the Algerian War of Independence intensified, Fanon’s commitment to decolonization led him to align with the National Liberation Front (FLN), deepening his involvement in the fight against colonial oppression.

The film’s narrative intertwines pivotal moments from Fanon’s earlier life in Martinique and France with contemporary scenes in Algeria, and ends with his untimely death from leukemia in 1961 at the age of 36 and his burial in Algeria, at a cemetery dedicated to fallen FLN fighters. His final book, The Wretched of the Earth, which he dictated from his hospital bed, was published shortly before his death and became a powerful manifesto for anti-colonial struggles around the world. Fanon, who would have become 100 in July 2025, remains a key intellectual figure in the field of postcolonial studies and current decolonization debates.

Eva Webster is a 21-year-old student of French and Caribbean heritage, with roots in Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Dominica. She is currently studying Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, where her academic interests are shaped by Caribbean and African history, politics, and questions of inequality. Alongside her studies, she works as a junior programmer for both Caribbean Creativity and Africadelic. Eva’s passion lies in culture in all its forms, from her love of R&B to her dedication to sewing and designing clothing inspired by traditional Caribbean garments. She sees creative expression as a powerful tool to reclaim identity, celebrate heritage, and strengthen community bonds. She values collective spaces where culture, dialogue, and belonging can flourish. Her ambition is to contribute to cultural and political initiatives that elevate and amplify the voices and experiences of minority communities.

Fanon (2024) is een meeslepend biografisch drama geregisseerd door Jean-Claude Barny, een Franse regisseur van Guadeloupeaanse en Trinidadiaanse afkomst, dat zich richt op Fanons periode in het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis van Blida in Algerije tijdens de jaren vijftig. In 1953 werd de Martinicaanse psychiater hoofd van de psychiatrische afdeling, waar hij zowel Franse soldaten als Algerijnse slachtoffers van marteling behandelde en vernieuwende, patiëntgerichte methoden van psychiatrische zorg introduceerde. Zijn progressieve aanpak stuitte op weerstand van collega’s en de directeur van het instituut. Naarmate de Algerijnse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog heviger werd, leidde Fanons inzet voor dekolonisatie ertoe dat hij zich aansloot bij het Nationaal Bevrijdingsfront (FLN), waardoor zijn betrokkenheid bij de strijd tegen koloniale onderdrukking werd verdiept.

De film verweeft cruciale momenten uit Fanons eerdere leven in Martinique en Frankrijk met hedendaagse scènes in Algerije, en eindigt met zijn vroegtijdige dood aan leukemie in 1961 op 36-jarige leeftijd en zijn begrafenis in Algerije, op een begraafplaats voor gevallen FLN-strijders. Zijn laatste boek, The Wretched of the Earth, dat hij dicteerde vanuit zijn ziekenhuisbed, werd kort voor zijn dood gepubliceerd en groeide uit tot een krachtig manifest voor antikoloniale strijd wereldwijd. Fanon, die dit jaar honderd jaar zou zijn geworden, blijft een sleutelfiguur in het veld van postkoloniale studies en de actuele dekolonisatiedebatten.

Ze ziet creatieve expressie als een krachtig middel om identiteit terug te claimen, erfgoed te vieren en gemeenschappen te versterken. Ze hecht veel waarde aan collectieve ruimtes waar cultuur, dialoog en een gevoel van verbondenheid tot leven komen. Haar ambitie is bij te dragen aan culturele en politieke initiatieven die de stemmen en ervaringen van minderheidsgemeenschappen versterken en zichtbaarder maken.
