YardVibes x Keti Koti Weekend 2023

Originally Suriname’s 𝗘𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝘆 on July 1, 𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗶 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗶 (meaning ‘the chain is broken’ in Sranantongo) has come to mark the day to commemorate the slavery past of the former Dutch colonies in the Caribbean and a celebration of the abolition of Dutch slavery (1863/1873). In honor of 𝗞𝗲𝘁𝗶 𝗞𝗼𝘁𝗶, this weekend we will be offering 𝗳𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 on our streaming platform 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀! 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗟𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗷𝗸𝘀𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 (2021) is a documentary about the genesis of the slavery exhibition in the Rijksmuseum and the way in which this leading national museum in the Netherlands aims to reinvents itself.

𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝘀 (2018) is an immersive documentary about a Maroon community in Suriname and how their powerful ties to the land have become endangered as industries threaten to devastate the region through deforestation and mining.

𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 (1994) is a documentary that traces the origins of the Brokopondo dam project in Surinam and the consequences of transmigration for the Maroon people, who were forced to leave their traditional lands.
