Suriname 50: Films + diepe taki #2

   In the 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝟱𝟬: 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀 + 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶, we, in collaboration with the initiative Contractarbeid uit de schaduw, will screen 𝗛𝗲𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴! Before this special screening, researcher, poet, and writer Jonathan Tjien Fooh will engages in conversation with key figures, each offering their own perspective on the impact and legacy of indentured labor:

– 𝗥𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗷𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗯𝗱𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗻 – film director, screenwriter, and documentary maker of 𝗛𝗲𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴
– 𝗕𝗶𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗟𝗮𝗹𝗯𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 – initiator of Indentured Labor Out of the Shadows
– 𝗝𝗮𝘀𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗘𝗹𝗮𝗵𝗶 – writer and researcher

Together, they will explore the history of indentured labor in Suriname, the consequences of the lack of awareness of indentured labor within colonial history in the Netherlands and Suriname, and why it is important to learn more about this history.

𝗛𝗲𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 is a 2013 Dutch docudrama about a forgotten massacre at a Surinamese sugar plantation, revealing harsh colonial exploitation of Javanese indentured laborers under a ruthless Scottish director, James Mavor, culminating in a violent uprising in 1902 by workers tormented by abuse and hardship, a story suppressed for decades.
