In Santiago de Cuba, rival conga bands scour the sparse marketplace for materials to create show-stopping numbers for the annual Carnival competition. In this film, documentary maker William Sabourin O’Reilly, an Afro-Cuban native to Havana who hasn’t lived in his home country for 17 years (he is now based in New Orleans), follows Lázaro, the leader of the Conga de Los Hoyos, who is determined to beat ‘the Shark’, his older and more establishment-favored competitor. Tensions build and tempers flare as the government restrictions and scarcity of present-day Cuba come to bear on one of the world’s poorest Carnivals. 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 offers us a rare window into communist Cuba, a country that is often romanticized, and almost always portrayed through the eyes of an outsider.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗬𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘆
Yuribert Capetillo Hardy, born in 1982 in Havana, Cuba, faced the challenges of poverty and a lack of hope in his home country. At 18, he moved to The Netherlands to study Management, Television, and Media. Tragically, at 26, Yuribert’s life took a devastating turn when his mother, still living in Havana, took her own life. This event profoundly shifted Yuribert’s perspective, giving him a renewed focus for the future. After completing his studies, Yuribert delved into travel filmmaking. His video ‘Roller Coaster India’ gained recognition as a Vimeo staff pick, propelling his career and earning mentions from BBC and National Geographic. Inspired by his passion, he founded Yosoy Video Productions, specializing in creative travel filmmaking. Yuribert’s success caught the attention of Dutch television network VPRO, leading to a collaboration on the four-episode series 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗮 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼 (2019), for which Yuribert returned to his home country after after 16 years. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗮’𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲
Cuba’s struggle for independence has been long and hard. First, in the late nineteenth century, there were three wars of independence against Spain: the Ten Years’ War (1868–1878), the Little War (1879–1880) and the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). Cuba finally gained independence from Spain in 1898, when the Spanish-American War, which lasted four months, ended Spain’s colonial rule in the Americas. On December 10, 1898, representatives of Spain and the United States signed a peace treaty in Paris, which anticipated Cuba’s independence. However, although the Treaty of Paris concluded the Spanish-American War, US forces continued to occupy Cuba until May 20, 1902, when a new Cuban government was able to take full control of the state’s affairs. Therefore, ‘El 20 de Mayo’, May 20, is often considered Cuban Independence Day. However, the current Cuban regime does not recognise this date, but January 1, 1959, instead, the day that the revolutionary movement led by Fidel Castro overthrew the government of Fulgencio Batista. The Cuban Revolution refers to the armed uprising that started in 1953 and eventually toppled the brutal dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. From this perspective, January 1, 2024, marks Cuba’s 65th anniversary of independence.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮, 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮
𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 is a film theatre in Amsterdam specifically dedicated to screening music films. 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 is a non-profit organization committed to the promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond. 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰 is an Amsterdam-based platform and festival promoting African and African diasporic cultural creativity, diversity and activism in the Netherlands. 𝗖𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮 is a film fiesta for the Latin American diaspora and Latin-minded community in Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands.

In Santiago de Cuba struinen rivaliserende congabands de schaarse markt af op zoek naar materiaal om spetterende nummers te maken voor de jaarlijkse carnavalscompetitie. In deze film volgt documentairemaker William Sabourin O’Reilly, een Afro-Cubaanse inwoner van Havana die al 17 jaar niet meer in zijn thuisland heeft gewoond (hij woont nu in New Orleans), Lázaro, de leider van de Conga de Los Hoyos, die vastbesloten is om ‘the Shark’, zijn oudere en gevestigde concurrent, te verslaan. De spanningen lopen op en de gemoederen verhitten als de beperkingen van de regering en de schaarste van het hedendaagse Cuba hun weerslag hebben op een van de armste carnavalsfeesten ter wereld. 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 biedt een zeldzaam kijkje in communistisch Cuba, een land dat vaak wordt geromantiseerd en bijna altijd wordt afgebeeld door de ogen van een buitenstaander.

Yuribert Capetillo Hardy, geboren in 1982 in Havana, Cuba, werd geconfronteerd met de uitdagingen van armoede en een gebrek aan hoop in zijn thuisland. Op 18-jarige leeftijd verhuisde hij naar Nederland om Management, Televisie en Media te studeren. Tragisch genoeg nam Yuriberts leven op 26-jarige leeftijd een verwoestende wending toen zijn moeder, die nog steeds in Havana woonde, zichzelf van het leven beroofde. Deze gebeurtenis veranderde Yuriberts perspectief en gaf hem een hernieuwde focus voor de toekomst. Na het afronden van zijn studie verdiepte Yuribert zich in het maken van reisfilms. Zijn video ‘Roller Coaster India’ kreeg erkenning als Vimeo staff pick, wat zijn carrière een boost gaf en vermeldingen opleverde van BBC en National Geographic. Geïnspireerd door zijn passie richtte hij Yosoy Video Productions op, gespecialiseerd in creatieve reisfilms. Yuriberts succes trok de aandacht van het Nederlandse televisienetwerk VPRO, wat leidde tot een samenwerking voor de vierdelige docuserie 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗮 𝗻𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼 (2019), waarvoor Yuribert na 16 jaar terugkeerde naar zijn geboorteland. Cuba heeft lang en hard gevochten voor onafhankelijkheid. Eerst waren er aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw drie onafhankelijkheidsoorlogen tegen Spanje: de Tienjarige Oorlog (1868-1878), de Kleine Oorlog (1879-1880) en de Cubaanse Onafhankelijkheidsoorlog (1895-1898). Cuba werd uiteindelijk onafhankelijk van Spanje in 1898, toen de Spaans-Amerikaanse Oorlog, die vier maanden duurde, een einde maakte aan de koloniale macht van Spanje in de Amerika’s. Op 10 december 1898 tekenden vertegenwoordigers van Spanje en de Verenigde Staten een vredesverdrag in Parijs dat vooruitliep op de onafhankelijkheid van Cuba. Echter, hoewel het Verdrag van Parijs de Spaans-Amerikaanse Oorlog beëindigde, bleven Amerikaanse troepen Cuba bezetten tot 20 mei 1902, toen een nieuwe Cubaanse regering de volledige controle over de staatszaken kon overnemen. Daarom markeert ‘El 20 de Mayo’, 20 mei, tegenwoordig de Cubaanse Onafhankelijkheidsdag. Het huidige Cubaanse regime erkent deze datum echter niet, maar 1 januari 1959, de dag waarop de revolutionaire beweging onder leiding van Fidel Castro de regering van Fulgencio Batista omver wierp.
