Honoring Reggae Legend Jimmy Cliff: The Harder They Come (+ Hurricane Melissa Relief Fundraiser)

Less than a month after 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 struck on October 28, Jamaica faced another loss: reggae legend 𝗝𝗶𝗺𝗺𝘆 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗳 passed away on November 24, at the age of 81. In tribute to Cliff (1944–2025), 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 hosts a special screening of 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲 (𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟮) on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟬, at 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗸𝘄𝗲𝗴 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮. The event is held in support of 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀, with all proceeds directed to aid communities in Jamaica affected by the humanitarian crisis following the storm. The Harder They Come (1972) is a landmark Jamaican film (and the first Jamaican film ever made!) that tells the story of Ivanhoe ‘Ivan’ Martin, a young man from the countryside who comes to Kingston seeking fame as a singer but is drawn into crime and violence by the harsh realities of urban life. Beyond its gripping narrative, the film is a cultural milestone: it introduced international audiences to the sounds of reggae and the lived experience of Jamaica’s poor, becoming a global symbol of resistance, ambition, and resilience. Jimmy Cliff, who both starred in the film and contributed its unforgettable soundtrack, brought authenticity, charisma, and emotional depth to the story, transforming it into a vehicle for reggae’s worldwide breakthrough. Hurricane Melissa was born over the warm waters of the Caribbean on October 21, 2025. What began as a tropical storm soon unleashed its full fury, growing into a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. Karla King is a Jamaican visual artist and storyteller, born and raised in Trelawny and now based in the Netherlands. Her work explores identity, belonging, and the emotional landscapes of womanhood, often drawing from her own lived experiences or those around her. Through painting, poetry, and social impact projects, Karla centres her artistry in offering solace and fostering awareness and understanding. She is also the founder of the Ackee Seed Foundation, which supports regenerative initiatives in Jamaica, including recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa. Guided by a belief in art as a tool for transformation, Karla is dedicated to bridging culture, community, and care, using creativity to nurture resilience and connection.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆 is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that is, since 2008, committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted 300+ screenings in Dutch cinemas and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. Nog geen maand na de verwoesting door Hurricane Melissa op 28 oktober, kreeg Jamaica opnieuw een verlies te verwerken: reggaelegende Jimmy Cliff overleed op 24 november op 81-jarige leeftijd. Als eerbetoon aan Cliff (1944–2025) organiseert Caribbean Creativity een speciale vertoning van The Harder They Come (1972) op zaterdag 20 december in Melkweg Cinema. Het evenement ondersteunt de hulpinspanningen voor de slachtoffers van Hurricane Melissa, waarbij alle opbrengsten naar de getroffen gemeenschappen in Jamaica gaan. The Harder They Come (1972) is een baanbrekende Jamaicaanse film (de eerste ooit geproduceerde Jamaicaanse speelfilm!) die het verhaal vertelt van Ivanhoe ‘Ivan’ Martin, een jonge man van het platteland die naar Kingston komt om beroemd te worden als zanger, maar door de harde realiteit van het stadsleven verstrikt raakt in criminaliteit en geweld. Naast het meeslepende verhaal is de film een cultureel mijlpaal: hij introduceerde internationale publieken aan de geluiden van reggae en het dagelijkse leven van de armere Jamaicaanse bevolking, en werd een wereldwijd symbool van verzet, ambitie en veerkracht.
