𝗞𝘂𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶 𝗨𝗻 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗯𝗹𝗼 is a documentary film by Corine Djaoen-Genaro that commemorates the 50th anniversary of Curaçao’s Carnival, focusing on the lead-up to the ‘Gran Marcha’ and exploring the historical significance of the celebration. Through interviews, archival footage, and vibrant visuals, it delves into the cultural importance of Carnival for the people of Curaçao, highlighting its role in fostering community identity and unity.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆
𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 is a short documentary by Sharine Rijsenburg exploring the rich history and cultural significance of bubbling music, a genre that originated in the 1980s within Caribbean-Dutch communities, particularly among Surinamese and Antillean youth in Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam. DJ Moortje, a Dutch-Caribbean DJ of Curaçaoan descent, is often credited as the pioneer of bubbling. In 1986, he accidentally played a dancehall record at an accelerated tempo in a Rotterdam club. Instead of stopping the track, the crowd responded enthusiastically, dancing in a new, quick, jerking style that became associated with bubbling.

The high-energy sound was soon embraced by other DJs, who developed the style, blending dancehall, reggae, and Surinamese and Antillean rhythms. Making the sound even more unique, DJs started remixing Jamaican dancehall with electronic beats. More than just a music genre, bubbling evolved into a dance movement, resembling dancehall but faster and more expressive. Above all, bubbling became a way for Surinamese- and Caribbean-Dutch youth in the Netherlands to express their cultural identity in a new social environment, including on Zomercarnaval (Summer Carnaval). 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 , which premiered at the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) last February, delves into the genre’s roots and its evolution into a vibrant club music and dance movement.

Caribbean Creativity is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that, since 2008, is committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 300 screenings in film theatres and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they hosted their first film festival, the Marley75 Film Festival, in Melkweg Cinema and various other venues across Amsterdam. That very same year, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers, where they offer over 100 titles and host online film programs, such as the annual Global Extraction Film Festival (2020-2022). Africadelic is a non-profit organization that, since 2016, is committed to the programming and promotion of African and African diasporic cultural creativity, diversity and activism in the Netherlands. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆
𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 is een korte documentaire van Sharine Rijsenburg over de rijke geschiedenis en culturele betekenis van bubbling-muziek, een genre dat in de jaren tachtig is ontstaan binnen Caribisch-Nederlandse gemeenschappen, met name onder Surinaamse en Antilliaanse jongeren in Rotterdam, Den Haag en Amsterdam. DJ Moortje, een Nederlandse-Caribische DJ van Curaçaose afkomst, wordt vaak gezien als de grondlegger van bubbling. In 1986 speelde hij per ongeluk een dancehallplaat op een te hoog tempo in een Rotterdamse club. In plaats van de track stop te zetten, reageerde het publiek enthousiast en begon op een nieuwe, snelle, schokkende manier te dansen die bij bubbling hoort.

De energieke sound werd al snel overgenomen door andere DJ’s, die het genre verder ontwikkelden door dancehall, reggae en Surinaamse en Antilliaanse ritmes te mengen. Om de sound uniek te maken, begonnen DJ’s Jamaicaanse dancehall te remixen met elektronische beats. Bubbling groeide uit tot meer dan alleen een muziekgenre; het werd een dansbeweging, die leek op dancehall maar sneller en expressiever was. Bovenal bood bubbling Surinaams- en Caribisch-Nederlandse jongeren in Nederland een manier om hun culturele identiteit te uiten in een nieuwe sociale omgeving, ook tijdens evenementen zoals Zomercarnaval. 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆, dat in februari 2025 in première ging op het International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), duikt in de oorsprong van het genre en de ontwikkeling tot een bruisende clubmuziek- en dansbeweging.

Voor het eerst georganiseerd in Amsterdam van 𝟭𝟭-𝟭𝟯 𝗷𝘂𝗹𝗶, toont dit unieke driedaagse festival hoe Carnaval filmmakers overal ter wereld heeft geïnspireerd om verhalen te vertellen over vreugde, verzet, gemeenschap en vrijheid. Caribbean Creativity is een non-profitorganisatie gevestigd in Amsterdam die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor het programmeren en promoten van Caribische en Caribisch-gethematiseerde cinema in Nederland. Caribbean Creativity heeft meer dan 300 filmvertoningen georganiseerd in bioscopen en op filmfestivals, inclusief diverse premières. In 2020 organiseerden ze hun eerste filmfestival, het Marley75 Film Festival, in Melkweg Cinema en andere locaties in Amsterdam. Datzelfde jaar lanceerden ze ook YardVibes, een streamingplatform met content van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers, met meer dan 100 titels en online filmprogramma’s zoals het jaarlijkse Global Extraction Film Festival (2020-2022). 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗰
Africadelic is een non-profitorganisatie die zich sinds 2016 inzet voor het programmeren en promoten van Afrikaanse en Afrikaanse diasporische culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme in Nederland. Jaarlijks organiseren zij rondom Internationale Afrikadag (25 mei) het Africadelic Festival in Paradiso en op diverse andere locaties in Amsterdam. Dit jaar vond de 10e editie plaats van 21-31 mei 2025, met speciale aandacht voor de 50e verjaardag van de onafhankelijkheid (1975) van vijf Afrikaanse landen (Angola, Mozambique, Kaapverdië, Sao Tomé & Principe en de Comoren) en Suriname.
