In light of the recent devastation caused by 𝗛𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 across the 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻, particularly in 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮, 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗮, 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰, the upcoming 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀 will be dedicated to 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 throughout the region. This means that all proceeds from the film rentals during the online festival, running from 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟮-𝟯𝟬, will go to 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀. We invite all film lovers, supporters of the Caribbean, and everyone committed to solidarity and (climate) justice to join us in celebrating Caribbean cinema while contributing to hurricane relief.

The hurricane created a 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, ravaging buildings, roads and vegetation, and bringing over 1m of rainfall and storm surges up to 4m. Melissa left much 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 in its wake, but 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻. As Portland876 so beautifully expressed, ’we have faced storms before, and each time, the 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 has proven unbreakable. From the mountains to the coastlines, our strength lies in our 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, our 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, and our 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 for each other.’

This spirit extends to 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻. To use the words of Exceptional Caribbean, ‘𝗵𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮 has torn through 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 and 𝗖𝘂𝗯𝗮, and now heads toward the 𝗕𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘀 (…), but even in the eye of the storm, the 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻. (…) And when the wind settles, we will rise – with 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆, 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, and exceptional 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵.’ They also remind us that hurricanes are not merely natural but 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 – the result of 𝗴𝗹𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗺 and 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: ‘Our islands contribute less than 1% of global emissions, yet we are hit hardest by hurricanes, rising seas, and bleaching reefs.’

Jamaica and the other islands affected, particularly Cuba and Haiti, will need 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱, however, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆, but 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, acknowledging their 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 and 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 in the face of 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. Together, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻… 🙏🏿🖤✊🏿
