This time we focus on the issue of 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻, and the question ‘𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻?’ To this end, we present a 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 of 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2026, 30′), a new documentary by Dutch filmmaking duo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 and 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 in collaboration with the 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠) and recent Grammy-winning reggae artiste 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶. In addition, we will be screening 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 (2022, 23′, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲), a short documentary by 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘂, made in collaboration with 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆, exploring gentrification, rising housing prices, and decreasing beach access in 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼.

Following the screening of both films, there will be a 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 increasingly limited 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 as a result of 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻, including in 𝗔𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗮, 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 and 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰̧𝗮𝗼. The discussion (in English), which will be moderated by radio host and cultural producer 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿, will bring together the filmmakers, who have just returned from a year of filmmaking in Jamaica, several other panelists (see below), and the audience to explore how these 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹, 𝘂𝗻𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝗻𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 are reshaping access to coastlines (and other lands) throughout the Caribbean – and what to do about it.

𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2026) is a new documentary by Dutch filmmaking duo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 and 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 in collaboration with 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠 and 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶 exploring the growing struggle for beach access in Jamaica. Since the 1950s, public access to the island’s beaches has steadily declined, leaving less than one percent of the coastline publicly accessible for Jamaicans. Over the decades, most of Jamaica’s beaches have been captured by private and tourist interests, and particularly since the 2000s large-scale hotel developments have limited beach access for Jamaicans. This film follows the grassroots movement resisting the privatization of Jamaican beaches by zooming in on three frontline struggles: Bob Marley Beach near Kingston, the Blue Lagoon in the parish of Portland, and Mammee Bay Beach on the island’s North Coast. The interviewees, all Jamaicans, reveal how the 1956 Beach Control Act, which is still in effect today, vests ownership of the foreshore in the Jamaican state (and actually the British Crown) and traces how this colonial-era law, combined with the island’s all-inclusive tourism model, has displaced communities, disrupted livelihoods, and degraded environments. Interwoven with archival footage, news clips, and recordings of protest rallies and court cases, the interviewees situate today’s beach access struggles within Jamaica’s troubled history of land ownership following emancipation and independence. They argue that the island’s tourism industry replicates plantation logic by monopolizing land, concentrating wealth, exporting profits, and, ultimately, marginalizing the people. 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲 shows that beach access, which is not only an issue in Jamaica but across the Caribbean and beyond, is an urgent matter of historical, economic, social, cultural and environmental justice, raising the question of who the so-called ‘tropical paradise’ of sun, sand, and sea truly serves, and at what cost…

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲
In the short documentary 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 (2022, 23′, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲), Puerto Rican journalist 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘂 examines the forces transforming 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼 and threatening to displace the people who call the island home. Through the experiences of residents of a marginalized urban neighborhood facing growing pressures of displacement, the film explores the impacts of 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, and 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 to attract wealthy outsiders, while many Puerto Ricans struggle to afford housing in their own communities. Released in connection with 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆’s song 𝗘𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻, 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 uses the global reach of one of Puerto Rico’s biggest artists to amplify Caribbean voices of resistance. Urgent yet deeply rooted in love for the island, the film offers a powerful portrait of Caribbean communities confronting insecurity, resisting displacement, and asserting their right to remain. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴
Karla King is a Jamaican visual artist, born and raised in Trelawny and now based in the Netherlands. Drawing on her background in sustainability and human-centered design, her work uses painting and poetry to explore themes including womanhood, identity, migration, and cultural heritage. King sees art as a vehicle for social change and a means of creating understanding and connection. In 2026, she founded the Ackee Seed Foundation, a Netherlands-based NGO that uses art and culture to support social development in Jamaica through community projects with young people, schools, and other educational organizations.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗞𝗷𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻
Kjelld Masoud Kroon is a program maker, thinker, and community organizer from Bonaire, where he was raised in Rincon. His work focuses on decolonisation, antiracism, identity, diaspora, and social and environmental justice, both in the Netherlands and on Bonaire. He serves on the youth advisory council BIT-Lab, advising the Public Entity Bonaire from a youth perspective. Kroon is also one of eight plaintiffs in the landmark climate case against the Dutch state, supported by Greenpeace, advocating for equal climate protection for Bonaire and challenging inequalities between the Caribbean and European Netherlands.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼
Wensly Francisco is a Curaçao-born Dutch documentary filmmaker, journalist, writer and producer. Born in Willemstad in 1980 and raised in the Netherlands from the age of seven, his work frequently explores Curaçaoan and Caribbean society, identity, inequality and representation. He is known for documentaries and series including Rauw Curaçao, All Inclusive Curaçao, Bandidos and Stikken in het paradijs, and published his debut novel Rust in 2022. Through his work, Francisco seeks to foreground perspectives and stories that often remain underrepresented in Dutch mainstream media.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠
JaBBEM (Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement) is a grassroots movement dedicated to protecting Jamaica’s coastal ecosystems while affirming the inherent right of all people to access, enjoy, and steward the island’s beaches. Rooted in the belief that Jamaica’s shores are part of a shared cultural and ecological inheritance, JaBBEM advocates against land privatization, tourism development, environmental degradation, and exclusionary practices that limit public access to coastal spaces. The movement brings together community members, environmental activists, cultural practitioners, and youth to promote sustainable coastal management, climate resilience, and environmental justice. Through beach cleanups, public education campaigns, policy advocacy, and cultural events, JaBBEM highlights the interconnectedness of ecological preservation and social equity. JaBBEM considers beaches not just as natural resources, but as vital spaces of history, identity, and community life – places where heritage, livelihood, and environmental responsibility meet. By mobilizing local voices and fostering collective action, the movement seeks to ensure that Jamaica’s beaches remain protected, accessible, and thriving for present and future generations. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶
Keznamdi is a Kingston-born Jamaican reggae artist, singer-songwriter, and producer known for blending roots reggae with contemporary sounds influenced by soul, hip-hop, and African musical traditions. Raised in a deeply musical family and shaped by experiences across Jamaica, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and the United States, he has become a leading voice within Jamaica’s reggae revival movement. Known for songs such as ‘Pressure,’ ‘Time,’ and ‘Grade,’ Keznamdi’s music explores themes of identity, spirituality, social justice, and liberation. He is also a collaborator and supporter of the documentary Beach Inna Bondage, contributing both his music and voice, and especially his song ‘Colonial Bondage,’ to the film’s message around public beach access, land rights, and environmental justice in Jamaica. Caribbean Creativity is a Kingston- and Amsterdam-based cultural non-profit organization committed to the production, programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted more than 350 screenings in film theatres and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. YardVibes currently offers more than 100 titles, including feature films, web series, documentaries, and short films, with new content added monthly. Deze keer richten we ons op de kwestie van de 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗱 en op de vraag: ‘𝘄𝗶𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗷𝗸 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼?’ Hiervoor presenteren we een 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗲 van 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2026, 30′), de nieuwe documentaire van het Nederlandse filmmakersduo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 en 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿, gemaakt in samenwerking met de 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 (𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠) en de onlangs met een Grammy bekroonde reggae-artiest 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶. Daarnaast vertonen we ook 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 (2022, 23′, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲), een korte documentaire van 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘂, gemaakt in samenwerking met 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆, over gentrificatie, stijgende huizenprijzen, en beperktere strandtoegang in 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼.

Na de vertoning van beide films zal er een gesprek plaatsvinden over de steeds verder beperkte 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻 als gevolg van 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮 en de rest van het 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗵 𝗴𝗲𝗯𝗶𝗲𝗱, waaronder ook 𝗔𝗿𝘂𝗯𝗮, 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗲 en 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗰̧𝗮𝗼. Aan de discussie (in het Engels), gemodereerd door radiohost en cultureel producent 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿, nemen de filmmakers deel, die net zijn teruggekeerd van een jaar filmmaken in Jamaica, samen met verschillende andere panelleden (zie onder) en het publiek. Ze gaan met elkaar in gesprek over de manier waarop deze 𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗷𝗸𝗲, 𝗼𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗵𝘁𝘃𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲 𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘂𝗿𝘇𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻 de toegang tot kustgebieden (en ander land) in het Caribisch gebied veranderen – en wat er aan gedaan kan worden.

𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲 (2026) is een nieuwe documentaire van het Nederlandse filmmakersduo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 en 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿, gemaakt in samenwerking met 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠 en 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶, over de groeiende strijd om toegang tot stranden in Jamaica. Sinds de jaren vijftig is de publieke toegang tot de stranden van het eiland gestaag afgenomen, waardoor minder dan één procent van de kustlijn nog openbaar toegankelijk is voor Jamaicanen. In de loop der decennia zijn de meeste stranden van Jamaica in handen gekomen van private partijen en toeristische belangen. Vooral sinds de jaren 2000 hebben grootschalige hotelontwikkelingen de toegang tot stranden voor Jamaicanen verder beperkt. De film volgt de grassrootsbeweging die zich verzet tegen de privatisering van Jamaicaanse stranden en zoomt in op drie frontlinies van deze strijd: Bob Marley Beach nabij Kingston, de Blue Lagoon in de parish Portland en Mammee Bay Beach aan de noordkust van het eiland. De geïnterviewden, allemaal Jamaicanen, leggen uit hoe de Beach Control Act uit 1956, die vandaag de dag nog steeds van kracht is, het eigendom van de kuststrook bij de Jamaicaanse staat (en feitelijk de Britse Kroon) legt. Ze laten zien hoe deze wet uit het koloniale tijdperk, in combinatie met het all-inclusive toerismemodel van het eiland, gemeenschappen heeft verdreven, bestaansmiddelen heeft aangetast en ecosystemen heeft beschadigd. Aan de hand van archiefbeelden, nieuwsfragmenten en opnames van protestbijeenkomsten en rechtszaken plaatsen de geïnterviewden de huidige strijd om toegang tot stranden binnen Jamaica’s problematische geschiedenis van grondbezit na de afschaffing van de slavernij en de onafhankelijkheid. Zij stellen dat de toeristische industrie van het eiland de logica van de plantage reproduceert door land te monopoliseren, rijkdom te concentreren, winsten weg te sluizen en uiteindelijk de bevolking te marginaliseren. 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲 laat zien dat toegang tot stranden – iets wat niet alleen in Jamaica speelt, maar in het hele Caribisch gebied en ver daarbuiten – een urgente kwestie is van historische, economische, sociale, culturele en ecologische rechtvaardigheid. De film stelt daarmee de vraag voor wie het zogenaamde ‘tropische paradijs’ van zon, zee en strand daadwerkelijk bedoeld is, en tegen welke prijs…

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲
In de korte documentaire 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 (2022, 23′, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲) onderzoekt de Puerto Ricaanse journalist 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘂 de krachten die 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼 veranderen en de mensen die het eiland hun thuis noemen dreigen te verdrijven. Aan de hand van de ervaringen van bewoners van een gemarginaliseerde stadswijk, die te maken krijgen met een toenemende druk om plaats te maken, onderzoekt de film de gevolgen van 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲, 𝘁𝗼𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲, 𝘃𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗴𝗼𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗸𝗸𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 en 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘃𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻 die vermogende buitenstaanders moeten aantrekken, terwijl veel Puerto Ricanen moeite hebben om huisvesting in hun eigen gemeenschappen te kunnen blijven betalen. 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 werd uitgebracht in samenhang met het nummer 𝗘𝗹 𝗔𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻 van 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 en gebruikt het wereldwijde bereik van een van Puerto Rico’s grootste artiesten om Caribische stemmen van verzet te versterken. Urgent en tegelijkertijd diep geworteld in liefde voor het eiland biedt de film een krachtig portret van Caribische gemeenschappen die worden geconfronteerd met onzekerheid, zich verzetten tegen verdringing en hun recht opeisen om te blijven. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗮 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴
Karla King is een Jamaicaanse beeldend kunstenaar, geboren en getogen in Trelawny en tegenwoordig woonachtig in Nederland. Vanuit haar achtergrond in duurzaamheid en mensgericht ontwerp gebruikt ze schilderkunst en poëzie om thema’s als vrouw-zijn, identiteit, migratie en cultureel erfgoed te verkennen. King ziet kunst als een middel voor sociale verandering en om begrip en verbinding te creëren. In 2026 richtte ze de Ackee Seed Foundation op, een in Nederland gevestigde NGO die kunst en cultuur inzet voor sociale ontwikkeling in Jamaica via gemeenschapsprojecten met jongeren, scholen en andere onderwijsorganisaties.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗷𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗱 𝗞𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗻
Kjelld Masoud Kroon is programmamaker, denker en community-organizer uit Bonaire, waar hij opgroeide in Rincon. Zijn werk richt zich op dekolonisatie, antiracisme, identiteit, diaspora en sociale en ecologische rechtvaardigheid, zowel in Nederland als op Bonaire. Hij is lid van de jongerenadviesraad BIT-Lab, waar hij het Openbaar Lichaam Bonaire adviseert vanuit het perspectief van jongeren. Kroon is daarnaast een van de acht eisers in de baanbrekende, door Greenpeace ondersteunde klimaatzaak tegen de Nederlandse staat, waarin hij pleit voor gelijke klimaatbescherming voor Bonaire en de ongelijkheid tussen Caribisch en Europees Nederland aan de kaak stelt.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗹𝘆 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼
Wensly Francisco is een op Curaçao geboren Nederlandse documentairemaker, journalist, schrijver en producent. Hij werd in 1980 geboren in Willemstad en groeide vanaf zijn zevende op in Nederland. In zijn werk onderzoekt hij regelmatig de Curaçaose en Caribische samenleving en thema’s als identiteit, ongelijkheid en representatie. Hij is bekend van documentaires en series als Rauw Curaçao, All Inclusive Curaçao, Bandidos en Stikken in het paradijs, en publiceerde in 2022 zijn debuutroman Rust. Met zijn werk wil Francisco perspectieven en verhalen naar voren brengen die in de Nederlandse mainstream media vaak onderbelicht blijven.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠
JaBBEM (Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement) is een grassrootsbeweging die zich inzet voor de bescherming van Jamaica’s kustecosystemen en tegelijkertijd het fundamentele recht van iedereen verdedigt om toegang te hebben tot de stranden van het eiland, ervan te genieten en er zorg voor te dragen. Vanuit de overtuiging dat de Jamaicaanse kust deel uitmaakt van een gedeeld cultureel en ecologisch erfgoed, verzet JaBBEM zich tegen de privatisering van land, toeristische ontwikkeling, aantasting van het milieu en uitsluitende praktijken die de publieke toegang tot kustgebieden beperken. De beweging brengt lokale gemeenschappen, milieuactivisten, culturele organisaties en jongeren samen om duurzaam kustbeheer, klimaatbestendigheid en ecologische rechtvaardigheid te bevorderen. Door middel van strandschoonmaakacties, publiekscampagnes, beleidsbeïnvloeding en culturele evenementen benadrukt JaBBEM de nauwe samenhang tussen ecologische bescherming en sociale rechtvaardigheid. JaBBEM beschouwt stranden niet alleen als natuurlijke hulpbronnen, maar ook als essentiële plekken van geschiedenis, identiteit en gemeenschapsleven—plaatsen waar erfgoed, levensonderhoud en verantwoordelijkheid voor het milieu samenkomen. Door lokale stemmen te mobiliseren en collectieve actie te stimuleren, streeft de beweging ernaar ervoor te zorgen dat Jamaica’s stranden beschermd, toegankelijk en vitaal blijven voor huidige en toekomstige generaties. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶
Keznamdi is een in Kingston geboren Jamaicaanse reggae-artiest, singer-songwriter en producer die bekendstaat om zijn combinatie van rootsreggae en hedendaagse klanken, beïnvloed door soul, hiphop en Afrikaanse muzikale tradities. Hij groeide op in een muzikale familie en werd gevormd door ervaringen in Jamaica, Tanzania, Ethiopië en de Verenigde Staten. Inmiddels geldt hij als een belangrijke stem binnen Jamaica’s reggae-revivalbeweging. In nummers als ‘Pressure’, ‘Time’ en ‘Grade’ behandelt Keznamdi thema’s als identiteit, spiritualiteit, sociale rechtvaardigheid en bevrijding. Daarnaast is hij partner en supporter van de documentaire 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲 en draagt hij met zijn muziek en stem, met name via zijn nummer ‘Colonial Bondage’, bij aan de boodschap van de film over publieke toegang tot stranden, landrechten en ecologische rechtvaardigheid in Jamaica. Caribbean Creativity is een culturele non-profitorganisatie gevestigd in Kingston en Amsterdam, die zich richt op de productie, programmering en promotie van Caribische cinema en films met een Caribisch thema. In de loop der jaren heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 350 filmvertoningen georganiseerd in bioscopen en op filmfestivals, waaronder talrijke premières. In 2020 lanceerde de organisatie YardVibes, een streamingplatform waarop werk van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers wordt vertoond. Africadelic is een in Amsterdam gevestigde non-profitorganisatie en platform dat zich inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Afrikaanse en Afrikaans-diasporische culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme, zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten. Het jaarlijkse Africadelic Festival is een ode aan het Afrikaanse continent en zijn wereldwijde diaspora en viert de culturele rijkdom en diepgaande invloed van Afrodescendents, mensen van Afrikaanse afkomst, op de mondiale cultuur en samenleving. The 𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗶 (‘deep conversation’) will bring together an inspiring panel consisting of film director 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗿, 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗟𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗲𝗸, author of 𝗟𝗼𝘃𝗲: 𝗔 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲: 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗲, 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲, a landmark book on the history of LGBTQ+ people in Suriname, 𝗝𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗷𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗲𝗻, one of the leading advocates behind the legalization and acceptance of same-sex marriage in Curaçao, and 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗿𝘂𝗹, a visual artist, writer, poet, and activist dedicated to advancing the rights and visibility of queer people of color. Moderated by 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗕𝘂𝘆𝗻𝗲, the discussion will explore how attitudes and realities have evolved across Surinamese, Dutch Caribbean, and Dutch societies, while examining the challenges that remain and the steps still needed to create a more inclusive future for queer communities.

In 1992, André Reeder, in collaboration with COC and with support from Strange Fruit, made the landmark documentary 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗵? In the film, Sook Ahn, Zarine, Ivan, Klaas, and Angelique speak candidly about their coming-out experiences, their relationships with their parents, the discovery of their sexuality, and their views on love and relationships. The documentary also provides educational information and was widely used throughout the Netherlands as an educational resource. 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗵? was broadcasted on Australian television in 1992 and, more recently, screened at a major LGBTQ+ event in London in 2024.

𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗵? | 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀
Made in 1992 by Surinamese-Dutch filmmaker André Reeder, in collaboration with COC Netherlands and the queer migrant collective Strange Fruit, 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗵? is a landmark documentary about sexuality, identity, family, and belonging. The film follows five young LGBTQ+ people from different cultural backgrounds, Sook Ahn, Zarine, Ivan, Klaas, and Angelique, who speak candidly about coming out, discovering their sexuality, navigating relationships with their parents, and developing their own ideas about love and partnership.

By bringing together voices rarely represented in Dutch media at the time, Reeder explores what it means to be queer within different cultural and family contexts. The documentary pays particular attention to the intersecting pressures experienced by LGBTQ+ people from migrant and racialized communities, who could face exclusion both within their communities of origin and within the predominantly white Dutch gay scene.

The title refers to the Tom Robinson Band’s 1978 protest song Glad to Be Gay, which challenged homophobia, discrimination, and violence in British society. Reeder’s addition of the questioning Dutch word ‘toch?’ – roughly translated as ‘right?’ or ‘isn’t it?’ – introduces an element of doubt and critique, asking how freely and proudly queer people could truly live within an often-hostile society.

Combining personal testimonies with accessible educational information, 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘆, 𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗵? was accompanied by teaching materials and used widely throughout the Netherlands as an educational and awareness-raising resource. More than three decades after its release, the film remains a moving and relevant document of queer resilience, intercultural dialogue, and the continuing struggle for recognition, acceptance, and equality.

Cockpit Country is iconic, epic and essential to Jamaica. Located in six Western parishes, Cockpit Country is Jamaica’s largest rain forest, the source of six major rivers and provides Jamaica with 40% of its fresh water. Cockpit Country forests produce large amounts of oxygen, cool temperatures and sequester millions of tons of carbon. A place of striking beauty, Cockpit Country is the Caribbean’s most important bio-diversity “hot spot”, with plants and animals found no where else in the world, and has the most species threatened with extinction. Cockpit Country, famous for growing the best yams, is central to Jamaica’s agriculture, food security and self sufficiency. It is where the Leeward maroons battled the English for almost a century and won their freedom long before Jamaica was granted political independence from Britain, and will always be a Jamaican symbol of rebellion, liberation and fortitude.

𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗽𝗶𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, a new feature documentary by Esther Figueroa, celebrates the multi-generational efforts by many to protect Cockpit Country, to defend its forests, flora and fauna, ecological heritage, agriculture, indigenous peoples, rural communities and way of life. The Save Cockpit Country Movement is over 100 years old and will continue into the future. The film both documents the varied strategies of the movement; from community engagement, research, sharing information, and media campaigns, to petitions, protests, and legal cases; and serves as an example of what it takes to make a social movement successful and sustainable. The film hopes that the dedication, commitment, creativity and bravery of those in the movement will inspire others to stand up for themselves and their communities, and to protect, love and defend Jamaica and each other.

𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2026) is a documentary by Kingston-based Dutch filmmaking duo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 and 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 in collaboration with 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠 and 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶 exploring the growing struggle for beach access in Jamaica. Since the 1950s, public access to the island’s beaches has steadily declined, leaving less than one percent of the coastline publicly accessible for Jamaicans. Over the decades, most of Jamaica’s beaches have been captured by private and tourist interests, and particularly since the 2000s large-scale hotel developments have limited beach access for Jamaicans.

This film follows the grassroots movement resisting the privatization of Jamaican beaches by zooming in on three frontline struggles: Bob Marley Beach near Kingston, the Blue Lagoon in the parish of Portland, and Mammee Bay Beach on the island’s North Coast. The interviewees, all Jamaicans, reveal how the 1956 Beach Control Act, which is still in effect today, vests ownership of the foreshore in the Jamaican state (and actually the British Crown) and traces how this colonial-era law, combined with the island’s all-inclusive tourism model, has displaced communities, disrupted livelihoods, and degraded environments. Interwoven with archival footage, news clips, and recordings of protest rallies and court cases, the interviewees situate today’s beach access struggles within Jamaica’s troubled history of land ownership following emancipation and independence. They argue that the island’s tourism industry replicates plantation logic by monopolizing land, concentrating wealth, exporting profits, and, ultimately, marginalizing the people.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗼𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗹
In the Netherlands, very few people know the remarkable yet tragic life story of Louis Doedel: a Surinamese trade unionist through and through. Born in Paramaribo in 1905, he attended secondary school there and became increasingly aware in the 1920s of poverty and social inequality, deciding to take action against it. However, his union activities were viewed with great suspicion by the colonial authorities. In 1937, just as he was about to present a petition to the governor on behalf of the working population, he was arrested. He was subsequently admitted ‘for observation’ to the Wolffenbuttel psychiatric institution. That ‘observation’ lasted until 1980. A few days after his release from the clinic, he passed away. Surinamese-Dutch journalist Nina Jurna sets out to uncover the history of her great-uncle and to examine the role of her homeland during the colonial era, turning the journey into a search for her own roots as well. Director Frank Zichem captures this exploration in this 50-minute documentary.

Since the 1950s, public access to the island’s beaches has steadily declined, leaving less than one percent of the coastline publicly accessible for Jamaicans. Over the decades, most of Jamaica’s beaches have been captured by private and tourist interests, and particularly since the 2000s large-scale hotel developments have limited beach access for Jamaicans.

This film follows the grassroots movement resisting the privatization of Jamaican beaches by zooming in on three frontline struggles: Bob Marley Beach near Kingston, the Blue Lagoon in the parish of Portland, and Mammee Bay Beach on the island’s North Coast. The interviewees, all Jamaicans, reveal how the 1956 Beach Control Act, which is still in effect today, vests ownership of the foreshore in the Jamaican state (and actually the British Crown) and traces how this colonial-era law, combined with the island’s all-inclusive tourism model, has displaced communities, disrupted livelihoods, and degraded environments. Interwoven with archival footage, news clips, and recordings of protest rallies and court cases, the interviewees situate today’s beach access struggles within Jamaica’s troubled history of land ownership following emancipation and independence. They argue that the island’s tourism industry replicates plantation logic by monopolizing land, concentrating wealth, exporting profits, and, ultimately, marginalizing the people.

For the first time, Rodney’s widow Patricia Rodney shares the personal toll of his murder on their family. Highlighting the demand for alternative historical perspectives, the film includes insights from Angela Davis, Gina Miller, and former Guyanese President Donald Ramotar.

Premiering at the British Film Institute’s largest screen to a sold-out audience, the film uncovers Rodney’s surveillance from age 19 after his visits to Russia and Cuba, as his academic and activist work was deemed threatening by British intelligence. A secret propaganda unit even financed negative reviews of his landmark book, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, which remains influential in modern movements like BLM and Pan-Africanism. In Santiago de Cuba, rival conga bands scour the sparse marketplace for materials to create show-stopping numbers for the annual Carnival competition. In this film, documentary maker William Sabourin O’Reilly, an Afro-Cuban native to Havana who hasn’t lived in his home country for 17 years (he is now based in New Orleans), follows Lázaro, the leader of the Conga de Los Hoyos, who is determined to beat ‘the Shark’, his older and more establishment-favored competitor. Tensions build and tempers flare as the government restrictions and scarcity of present-day Cuba come to bear on one of the world’s poorest Carnivals. 𝗟𝗮𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗸 offers us a rare window into communist Cuba, a country that is often romanticized, and almost always portrayed through the eyes of an outsider.

Being practiced most notably in Jamaica, The Bahamas, Belize, and Florida, this documentary focuses on Bahamian Junkanoo, hosted over Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. The largest Junkanoo celebration takes place on Bay Street, in downtown Nassau, but Bahamians across the 16 islands celebrate this joyful tradition. From colourful costumes to exuberant dance routines, participants spend months preparing for the pageantry of this street parade accompanied by the steady beat of whistles, cowbells, horns, and goatskin drums that starts in the wee hours after midnight.

Through Aleksia’s eyes, Pavilhão reveals how samba emerged from generations of Afro-Brazilian struggle and celebration, highlighting the powerful cultural forces that continue to shape this music and its significance today.

𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 is a short documentary by Sharine Rijsenburg exploring the rich history and cultural significance of bubbling music, a genre that originated in the 1980s within Caribbean-Dutch communities, particularly among Surinamese and Antillean youth in Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam. DJ Moortje, a Dutch-Caribbean DJ of Curaçaoan descent, is often credited as the pioneer of bubbling. In 1986, he accidentally played a dancehall record at an accelerated tempo in a Rotterdam club. Instead of stopping the track, the crowd responded enthusiastically, dancing in a new, quick, jerking style that became associated with bubbling. The high-energy sound was soon embraced by other DJs, who developed the style, blending dancehall, reggae, and Surinamese and Antillean rhythms. Making the sound even more unique, DJs started remixing Jamaican dancehall with electronic beats. More than just a music genre, bubbling evolved into a dance movement, resembling dancehall but faster and more expressive. Above all, bubbling became a way for Surinamese- and Caribbean-Dutch youth in the Netherlands to express their cultural identity in a new social environment, including on Zomercarnaval (Summer Carnaval). 𝗕𝘂𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 , which premiered at the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) last February, delves into the genre’s roots and its evolution into a vibrant club music and dance movement.

Fanon is a compelling biographical drama directed by Jean-Claude Barny, a French director of Guadeloupean and Trinidadian origin, that focuses on Fanon’s tenure at the Blida psychiatric hospital in Algeria during the 1950s. In 1953, the Martiniquan psychiatrist became the head of the hospital’s psychiatry department, where he treated both French soldiers and Algerian victims of torture and introduced innovative, patient-centered methods of psychiatric care. His progressive approach faced resistance from colleagues and the institution’s director. As the Algerian War of Independence intensified, Fanon’s commitment to decolonization led him to align with the National Liberation Front (FLN), deepening his involvement in the fight against colonial oppression. The film’s narrative intertwines pivotal moments from Fanon’s earlier life in Martinique and France with contemporary scenes in Algeria, and ends with his untimely death from leukemia in 1961 at the age of 36 and his burial in Algeria, at a cemetery dedicated to fallen FLN fighters. His final book, The Wretched of the Earth, which he dictated from his hospital bed, was published shortly before his death and became a powerful manifesto for anti-colonial struggles around the world. Fanon, who would have become 100 in July 2025, remains a key intellectual figure in the field of postcolonial studies and current decolonization debates.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗕𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗚𝗶𝗿𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰
Black Girl Magic is a short film by debut filmmaker Meron Taye that explores the unexpected connection between two Black women from different backgrounds who meet at an Ethiopian café in Amsterdam. Mahlet, calm and reflective, is quietly enjoying her coffee when Kristal, an overworked editor-in-chief of a glossy magazine from Bonaire, arrives in a state of visible frustration, loudly speaking Papiamentu on the phone until her battery dies. What begins as an awkward silence gradually develops into an intimate and emotionally charged conversation. As the two women open up to one another, they reflect on their roots in Ethiopia and Bonaire, the pressures they carry, feelings of guilt toward family, the importance of rest, and the ongoing impact of stress on mental health. Through their exchange, the film captures a rare moment of vulnerability, recognition, and solidarity between Black women navigating the demands of contemporary life. Produced by PRPL as part of the Dutch talent development programme De Ontmoeting, Black Girl Magic marks Taye’s directorial debut and premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival. In just seven minutes, the film offers a sensitive and nuanced portrait of Black womanhood, emotional care, and the healing power of everyday encounters.

Eva Webster is a 21-year-old student of French and Caribbean heritage, with roots in Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Dominica. She is currently studying Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, where her academic interests are shaped by Caribbean and African history, politics, and questions of inequality. Alongside her studies, she works as a junior programmer for both Caribbean Creativity and Africadelic. Eva’s passion lies in culture in all its forms, from her love of R&B to her dedication to sewing and designing clothing inspired by traditional Caribbean garments. She sees creative expression as a powerful tool to reclaim identity, celebrate heritage, and strengthen community bonds. She values collective spaces where culture, dialogue, and belonging can flourish. Her ambition is to contribute to cultural and political initiatives that elevate and amplify the voices and experiences of minority communities.

Fanon (2024) is een meeslepend biografisch drama geregisseerd door Jean-Claude Barny, een Franse regisseur van Guadeloupeaanse en Trinidadiaanse afkomst, dat zich richt op Fanons periode in het psychiatrisch ziekenhuis van Blida in Algerije tijdens de jaren vijftig. Zion (2025), directed by Guadeloupean filmmaker Nelson Foix, follows Chris, a young man navigating a precarious life in the port city of Pointe-à-Pitre. Caught between petty crime, fast living, and limited prospects, his life takes an unexpected turn when a baby is left at his doorstep just as he’s pulled into a risky drug job. Suddenly faced with responsibility, Chris is thrust into a tense journey that forces him to confront questions of survival, masculinity, and change.

Beyond its gripping story, Zion is considered a landmark in Caribbean cinema. Shot largely in Guadeloupean Creole, it offers an authentic portrayal of local language and culture, while challenging stereotypical “postcard” images of the Caribbean. Instead, it foregrounds urban realities such as inequality, youth unemployment, and social marginalization. Featuring many non-professional actors from local communities, the film deepens its social realism and sense of ownership over Caribbean storytelling.

Zion is also very much a music-driven film, using its soundtrack and sound design as key elements in shaping the film’s realism, emotional tone, and cultural specificity. Rooted deeply in Guadeloupean life through its use of Creole language, perspective, and culture, the film integrates music by Antillean artists to ground its world sonically. Through its collaboration with local musicians, Zion creates a rich sensory immersion, where sound becomes central to experiencing the rhythms of Guadeloupean life.

Zion has seen strong success in the French Caribbean, drawing large local audiences even before its wider French release. Praised for its resonance and authenticity, Zion is part of a growing wave of Caribbean films gaining international visibility while staying rooted in their communities.

With a deep-rooted bicultural perspective, she leverages her rich heritage and experiences to bridge cultures and inspire vibrant artistic dialogues. For the past ten years, Sandra has been immersed in Amsterdam’s dynamic cultural scene, where she has led innovative productions and events that celebrate creative expression and community engagement. In addition to her behind-the-scenes work, she has also taken on performance roles in theatre and dance shows, further enriching her contributions to the arts.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗭𝗶𝗼𝗻
Zion (2025), geregisseerd door de Guadeloupse filmmaker Nelson Foix, volgt Chris, een jonge man die zijn weg probeert te vinden in een precair bestaan in de havenstad Pointe-à-Pitre. Gevangen tussen kleine criminaliteit, een snel leven en beperkte vooruitzichten, neemt zijn leven een onverwachte wending wanneer er een baby voor zijn deur wordt achtergelaten, net op het moment dat hij betrokken raakt bij een risicovolle drugsdeal. Plotseling geconfronteerd met verantwoordelijkheid belandt Chris in een intense reis waarin hij wordt gedwongen na te denken over overleven, mannelijkheid en verandering.

Naast het meeslepende verhaal wordt Zion beschouwd als een mijlpaal binnen de Caribische cinema. De film, grotendeels opgenomen in het Guadeloups Creools, biedt een authentieke weergave van de lokale taal en cultuur en doorbreekt stereotiepe ‘ansichtkaart’-beelden van het Caribisch gebied. In plaats daarvan legt de film de nadruk op stedelijke realiteiten zoals ongelijkheid, jeugdwerkloosheid en sociale marginalisering. Met veel niet-professionele acteurs uit lokale gemeenschappen versterkt Zion zijn sociaal-realistische karakter en het gevoel van eigenaarschap over Caribische verhalen.

Zion is ook een muziekgedreven film, waarbij de soundtrack en het sounddesign een sleutelrol spelen in het vormgeven van het realisme, de emotionele toon en de culturele specificiteit van de film. Diep geworteld in het Guadeloupeaanse leven, door het gebruik van Creoolse taal, perspectief en cultuur, integreert de film muziek van Antilliaanse artiesten om zijn wereld ook sonisch te verankeren. Door de samenwerking met lokale muzikanten creëert Zion een rijke zintuiglijke beleving, waarin geluid centraal staat in het ervaren van de ritmes van het Guadeloupeaanse leven.

Met name in de Franse Cariben heeft Zion veel succes behaald en trok het grote aantallen bezoekers nog vóór de bredere release in Frankrijk. Geprezen om zijn herkenbaarheid en authenticiteit maakt Zion deel uit van een groeiende golf Caribische films die internationaal steeds zichtbaarder worden, terwijl ze stevig geworteld blijven in hun gemeenschappen.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀
Sandra Roberts, geboren en getogen in de buitenwijken van Parijs uit Frans-Caribische ouders afkomstig van de eilanden Guadeloupe en Martinique, is een creatieve event producer, programmeur en performer, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Vanuit een diepgeworteld bicultureel perspectief zet zij haar rijke achtergrond en ervaringen in om bruggen te slaan tussen culturen en inspirerende artistieke dialogen te stimuleren. De afgelopen tien jaar is Sandra actief binnen de dynamische culturele scene van Amsterdam, waar zij innovatieve producties en evenementen heeft geleid die creatieve expressie en community engagement centraal stellen. Naast haar werk achter de schermen heeft zij ook als performer opgetreden in theater- en dansvoorstellingen, waarmee zij haar bijdrage aan de kunsten verder heeft verdiept.

Africadelic is een platform dat zich richt op de programmering en promotie van Afrikaanse en Afro-diasporische culturele creativiteit, diversiteit en activisme in Nederland. Het jaarlijkse Africadelic Festival is een ode aan het Afrikaanse continent en haar wereldwijde diaspora, en toont de culturele rijkdom en invloed van Afrodescendant gemeenschappen op de mondiale cultuur en samenleving. Roland Colastica is a Curaçaoan stage actor, director, poet, and writer whose work has made a lasting impact on Caribbean theatre and literature. With a career spanning decades, he is known for his powerful presence on stage and his commitment to storytelling rooted in the culture, language, and lived experiences of Curaçao. As a writer, Colastica has created a rich body of work for both children and adults, blending imagination with social reflection. His poetry and stories explore themes of identity, heritage, and resilience. He is also the creator of the documentary series Awo, Now, Nu, which reflects his ongoing dedication to capturing contemporary Caribbean voices and perspectives.

During the summer school break, as the Football World Cup fills the streets with excitement, 10-year-old Chikí, whose name means ‘small’, spends his days playing football in a vibrant but unforgiving neighborhood in Curaçao. Gifted beyond his years, he dreams of becoming a professional player, imagining international stadiums and financial freedom. Proud and fiercely independent, he hides his family’s poverty behind talent and bravado. When Chikí overhears their landlord threatening eviction unless the rent is paid by Saturday, he secretly decides to help his overworked mother. Together with his best friend Buchi, he enters illegal street football matches: fast, cage-style games run by two armed teenage gangsters, Brutu and the volatile Malbat. The risks are high, but Chikí’s skill quickly makes him a local sensation, and the prize money starts to grow. Guided by his devoted grandmother and Prèkè, a rebellious young coach who teaches that heart matters as much as ambition, Chikí struggles as rumors of violence spread and he is pressured to deliberately lose a match. He must choose between fear, integrity, and survival. On the Saturday of the final game, dubbed the neighborhood’s “real World Cup”, the stakes are high. When Malbat pulls a gun, an unexpected act of sacrifice changes everything, forcing Chikí to confront what heroism truly means, both on and off the field.

His work is characterized by a thoughtful, observational approach, bringing forward voices and perspectives that are often underrepresented. Through his filmmaking, Petronia engages with themes of belonging, memory, and the complexities of contemporary Caribbean life. Committed to developing and sharing Caribbean stories on both a local and international level, Ramses Petronia is part of a new generation of filmmakers shaping the region’s cinematic landscape.

During history class, Rinio, Marvin, and Dogla become captivated by the story of the mysterious Fort Buku, once the refuge of the Boni freedom fighters. These warriors were formerly enslaved people who fought back against colonial oppression. When the three friends learn about the fort’s unresolved disappearance, they head into the Surinamese jungle to find it. What starts as an exciting adventure soon turns into a magical journey that connects them to their roots.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 | 𝗟𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼
Loëlle Monsanto is a filmmaker from Suriname, based in the Netherlands. Her work often features youth horror, magical realism, and culturally rooted stories. She made her debut with Sranan Folktales, a short horror web series that she produced independently in Suriname between 2016 and 2019, together with a group of self-taught young creatives. For this series, she wrote the scripts and directed all episodes. In 2019, Loelle moved to the Netherlands to pursue further studies at the University of the Arts Utrecht. For her graduation in 2023, she wrote and directed the short youth horror film Asema, the sixth episode of Sranan Folktales. The fi lm won the Wildcard from the Netherlands Film Fund, which enabled the development of a new youth film. With this support, she made Fort Buku, a film she wrote, co-produced, and directed. Fort Buku premiered on 28 September 2025 at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Awo, Now, Nu is een baanbrekende documentaireserie die de complexe thema’s van identiteit, sociale ongelijkheid en activisme binnen het Nederlands-Caribisch gebied verkent. Door middel van meeslepende verhalen en levendige storytelling werpt de serie licht op de strijd en de veerkracht van gemeenschappen die streven naar gelijkheid en erkenning. Door te focussen op persoonlijke verhalen nodigt Awo, Now, Nu kijkers uit om stil te staan bij het verleden en een toekomst van veerkracht en hoop voor zich te zien.

Roland Colastica is een Curaçaose toneelacteur, regisseur, dichter en schrijver die een blijvende stempel heeft gedrukt op het Caribische theater en de literatuur. Met een carrière die meerdere decennia beslaat, staat hij bekend om zijn krachtige podiumprésence en zijn toewijding aan verhalen die diep geworteld zijn in de cultuur, taal en geleefde realiteit van Curaçao. Als schrijver heeft Colastica een veelzijdig en rijk oeuvre opgebouwd voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen, waarin verbeeldingskracht hand in hand gaat met scherpe maatschappelijke reflectie. In zijn poëzie en verhalen verkent hij thema’s als identiteit, erfgoed en veerkracht. Daarnaast is hij de maker van de documentaireserie Awo, Now, Nu, waarin hij zich richt op het vastleggen van hedendaagse Caribische stemmen en perspectieven.

Tijdens de zomervakantie, terwijl het WK voetbal de straten vult met opwinding, brengt de tienjarige Chikí, wiens naam ‘klein’ betekent, zijn dagen door met voetballen in een levendige maar meedogenloze wijk op Curaçao. Begaafd voor zijn leeftijd droomt hij ervan profvoetballer te worden, met visioenen van internationale stadions en financiële vrijheid. Trots en fel onafhankelijk verbergt hij de armoede van zijn familie achter talent en bravoure. Wanneer Chikí hoort hoe hun huisbaas dreigt met uitzetting als de huur niet voor zaterdag wordt betaald, besluit hij in het geheim zijn overwerkte moeder te helpen. Samen met zijn beste vriend Buchi neemt hij deel aan illegale straatvoetbalwedstrijden: snelle, kooi-achtige wedstrijden georganiseerd door twee gewapende tienergangsters, Brutu en de onvoorspelbare Malbat. De risico’s zijn groot, maar Chikí’s talent maakt hem al snel tot een lokale sensatie en het prijzengeld begint te groeien. Onder begeleiding van zijn toegewijde grootmoeder en Prèkè, een rebelse jonge coach die hem leert dat hart net zo belangrijk is als ambitie, raakt Chikí verstrikt wanneer geruchten over geweld toenemen en hij onder druk wordt gezet om opzettelijk een wedstrijd te verliezen. Hij moet kiezen tussen angst, integriteit en overleving. Op de zaterdag van de finale, door de buurt bestempeld als het ‘echte WK’, staan de spanningen op scherp. Wanneer Malbat een pistool trekt, verandert een onverwachte daad van opoffering alles en wordt Chikí gedwongen na te denken over wat heldendom werkelijk betekent, zowel op als buiten het veld.

Ramses Petronia is een Curaçaose filmmaker en visueel verteller wiens werk zich richt op identiteit, cultuur en de sociale realiteit van het Caribisch gebied. Met een scherp gevoel voor sfeer en narratieve gelaagdheid maakt hij films die zowel intiem als reflectief zijn, vaak geworteld in de geleefde ervaringen van zijn gemeenschap. Zijn werk kenmerkt zich door een bedachtzame, observerende benadering, waarbij hij stemmen en perspectieven naar voren brengt die vaak onderbelicht blijven. In zijn films onderzoekt Petronia thema’s als verbondenheid, herinnering en de complexiteit van het hedendaagse Caribische leven. Met een sterke toewijding aan het ontwikkelen en delen van Caribische verhalen, zowel lokaal als internationaal, behoort Ramses Petronia tot een nieuwe generatie filmmakers die het filmische landschap van de regio vormgeeft.

Tijdens de geschiedenisles raken Rinio, Marvin en Dogla gefascineerd door het verhaal van het mysterieuze Fort Buku, ooit een schuilplaats van de Boni-vrijheidsstrijders. Deze strijders waren voorheen tot slaaf gemaakte mensen die in opstand kwamen tegen koloniale onderdrukking. Wanneer de drie vrienden horen dat de verdwijning van het fort nooit is opgehelderd, trekken ze de Surinaamse jungle in om het te vinden. Wat begint als een spannend avontuur, verandert al snel in een magische reis die hen verbindt met hun roots.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿 | 𝗟𝗼𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼
Loëlle Monsanto is een filmmaker uit Suriname, gevestigd in Nederland. In haar werk komen jeugdhorror, magisch realisme en cultureel gewortelde verhalen regelmatig terug. Ze maakte haar debuut met Sranan Folktales, een korte horror webserie die zij tussen 2016 en 2019 in Suriname volledig zelfstandig produceerde. Voor deze reeks schreef ze de scenario’s en regisseerde zij de afleveringen. In 2019 verhuisde Loëlle naar Nederland om verder te studeren aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht. Voor haar afstuderen in 2023 maakte zij als schrijver en regisseur de korte jeugdhorrorfilm Asema, de zesde aflevering van Sranan Folktales. De film won de Wildcard van het Nederlands Filmfonds, waarmee een nieuwe jeugdfilm kon worden ontwikkeld. Met deze steun maakte zij Fort Buku, een film die zij schreef, coproduceerde en regisseerde. Fort Buku ging op 28 september 2025 in première op het Nederlands Film Festival.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
Caribbean Creativity is een in Amsterdam gevestigde non-profitorganisatie die zich sinds 2008 inzet voor de programmering en promotie van Caribische en Caribisch-georiënteerde cinema in Nederland en daarbuiten. Door de jaren heen heeft Caribbean Creativity meer dan 300 vertoningen georganiseerd in Nederlandse bioscopen en op filmfestivals, waaronder tal van premières. In 2020 lanceerde de organisatie YardVibes, een streamingplatform met werk van onafhankelijke Caribische en Afrikaanse filmmakers. 𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗰𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 (2026, 29’) is a short documentary by Kingston-based filmmaking duo 𝗘𝗺𝗶𝗲𝗹 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀 and 𝗘𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗲 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗲𝗿 in collaboration with with 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠 and 𝗞𝗲𝘇𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗱𝗶 exploring the growing struggle for beach access in Jamaica. Since the 1950s, public access to the island’s beaches has steadily declined, leaving less than one percent of the coastline publicly accessible for Jamaicans. Over the decades, most of Jamaica’s beaches have been captured by private and tourist interests, and particularly since the 2000s large-scale hotel developments have limited beach access for Jamaicans.

This film follows the grassroots movement resisting the privatization of Jamaican beaches by zooming in on three frontline struggles: Bob Marley Beach near Kingston, the Blue Lagoon in the parish of Portland, and Mammee Bay Beach on the island’s North Coast. The interviewees, all Jamaicans, reveal how the 1956 Beach Control Act, which is still in effect today, vests ownership of the foreshore in the Jamaican state (and actually the British Crown) and traces how this colonial-era law, combined with the island’s all-inclusive tourism model, has displaced communities, disrupted livelihoods, and degraded environments. Interwoven with archival footage, news clips, and recordings of protest rallies and court cases, the interviewees situate today’s beach access struggles within Jamaica’s troubled history of land ownership following emancipation and independence. They argue that the island’s tourism industry replicates plantation logic by monopolizing land, concentrating wealth, exporting profits, and, ultimately, marginalizing the people.

𝗕𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗮 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗴𝗲 shows that beach access, which is not only an issue in Jamaica but across the Caribbean and beyond, is an urgent matter of historical, economic, social, cultural and environmental justice, raising the question of who the tropical paradise of sun, sand, and sea truly serves, and at what cost…

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲
𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 (2022, 23’, 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲) is a short film by 𝗕𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘂 in collaboration with 𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗻𝘆 that examines gentrification, housing and beach access in 𝗣𝘂𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗼. The film follows residents of a marginalized urban neighborhood on the island as they confront the pressures of displacement and urban redevelopment. Through intimate portraits and everyday encounters, 𝗔𝗾𝘂𝗶 𝗩𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲 highlights how communities navigate insecurity, resilience, and collective resistance in the face of property and tourism development. Centering Puerto Rican voices, it reflects on belonging, dignity, and the right to remain in Caribbean spaces that are increasingly threatened by external economic and political forces.

𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗝𝗮𝗕𝗕𝗘𝗠
The Jamaica Beach Birthright Environmental Movement (JaBBEM) is a grassroots movement dedicated to protecting Jamaica’s coastal ecosystems while affirming the inherent right of all people to access, enjoy, and steward the island’s beaches. Rooted in the belief that Jamaica’s shores are part of a shared cultural and ecological inheritance, JaBBEM advocates against land privatization, tourism development, environmental degradation, and exclusionary practices that limit public access to coastal spaces. The movement brings together community members, environmental activists, cultural practitioners, and youth to promote sustainable coastal management, climate resilience, and environmental justice. Through beach cleanups, public education campaigns, policy advocacy, and cultural events, JaBBEM highlights the interconnectedness of ecological preservation and social equity. JaBBEM considers beaches not just as natural resources, but as vital spaces of history, identity, and community life – places where heritage, livelihood, and environmental responsibility meet. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆
Caribbean Creativity is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that is, since 2008, committed to the programming and promotion of Caribbean and Caribbean-themed cinema in the Netherlands and beyond. Over the years, Caribbean Creativity has hosted over 300 screenings in Dutch cinemas and at film festivals, including numerous premieres. In 2020, they launched YardVibes, a streaming platform featuring content from independent Caribbean and African filmmakers. YardVibes currently offers over 100 titles, including feature films, web series, documentaries, and short films, with new content added monthly. Africadelic is an Amsterdam-based non-profit organization that, since 2016, is committed to the programming and promotion of African and African diasporic cultural creativity, diversity and activism in the Netherlands.
